Description/Paper Instructions
Creating the Annotations for the Annotated bibliography
Remember, you must have 8-12 sources and they need to be labeled Primary section and secondary
section:
Primary sources are where the annotations are going to go, this tells the reader that they are the
main sources you used.
Secondary sources are articles that you looked at, but may not have quotes from.
At least 3 Academic Journals/Scholarly Sources (from our Databases)
Must have at least 5 evaluative annotations between 150-200 words, if you add two more, then
possible 2 points extra credit.
Annotations must include: Where you got the work, 2-3 sentence summary of the article, the
author’s credentials or credibility, how you plan to use the article in your paper, what was
effective/useful? What was missing or not fully developed or explained? BE SPECIFIC!
Looking for articles:
As you look for articles, begin to set them aside in OneDrive or GoogleDrive and create a list with
them. Next, identify the primary and secondary sources you plan to use for the paper (these must be
labeled in the annotated bibliography)
Alphabetize each section-Primary and Secondary
Work on annotations, which will go in the primary section
Check to make sure ALL sources are in MLA.
Creating/Writing the paper:
Always, always begin with the introduction/ this is your proposal which you have edited and revised
from my comments. Delete the first sentence (The issue I want to propose) and insert your own
hook/attn grabber. This can be a quote from a source, a statistic, even one rhetorical question! It’s
up to you. Make sure your introduction has a sub-label, like our sample paper. This can be your
issue, or simply Introduction.
Background information on issue-Educate the reader on the history of your issue, identify people
involved, key terms or labels used, and any specific problems the reader or you became aware of. I
highly recommend having at least 2-3 different sources for this section, some can be for the
annotated bibliography!? Make sure your sources are diverse and informative. This section must
have a sub-label.
Main Viewpoint/Position- This can be a popular viewpoint you noticed in research or maybe one you
have? Make sure you identify who or what demographic is making this viewpoint. Also, what key
problems or challenges this viewpoint is raising. Always follow the research! I highly recommend at
least 2-3 different sources here and they can be used for the annotated bib. This section must have a
sub-label.
Counterargument OR Alternative Viewpoint- If you noticed writers arguing against the popular
viewpoint or questioning evidence with it, explain it here. If you have an issue where there may not
be a counterargument (ex. Water pollution), look for alternative viewpoints or positions and discuss
them her. What are the counterarguments and who are making them? What issues are they
addressing/are they countering the viewpoint you outlined in the third section? Explain fully. Again,
make sure to have a sub-label and 2-3 solid, diverse sources.
Resolutions/Solutions- this is the final paragraph or section of your paper. DO NOT label it as a
conclusion, we are not writing that. Here, discuss what possible solutions or resolutions are being
made to address this issue. Make sure to add at least 2-3 sources here.
TIPS: Remember that the final paper must be typed, double spaced, 12 point font and in Times New
Roman. It must be in MLA format and you need to quote or paraphrase to support all claims or
positions you are making in here. Quotes cannot be longer than 3 sentences, and all quotes and
paraphrases must be cited. Always check the sample paper and MLA Quick guide for help.
