Create a Place Creative Writing Essay
Any creative writing piece should evoke emotion, but creative nonfiction, especially something like a memoir, lives or dies by it. In this activity, we will explore how we convey feelings about a place in your life (or your past). You will write three short paragraphs (minimum four sentences each) describing this place in three different steps. Unlike our previous activity of practicing vivid description, I expect you to focus more on word choice that enhances mood and conveys emotional connections to the subject matter as an author.
Step 1:
Think about your favorite place. It could be any kind of house or building. Maybe it’s a room. Maybe it’s an event that takes place in a specific location. Whatever it is, write one paragraph describing the place – not just in terms of what it looks like, but in such a way that it also conveys the mood, your feelings and emotions, about that place. What makes it feel warm and inviting, or strange and marvelous? Are there specific objects within that hold special meaning to you?
Step 2:
Destroy your favorite place. By this I mean think about its destruction. This could come in many forms, from something like a disaster to simply becoming neglected or overgrown. In a new paragraph, write about what this place looks like now. Think about what emotions come up as you do this. While it can sometimes be hard, or even sad, thinking and writing about the loss of something you care about (even if it’s not true), it can help us identify deeper feelings about things, and even help us realize more what it was we appreciate about its existence.
Step 3:
Rebuild. Imagine someone (someone you know or maybe some new stranger in the future) finds your favorite place and decides to clean it up, to fix or repurpose it. In a final paragraph, write about this new place. What have they done with it? Are there elements of the original space that still linger? That have been given a new life? Make sure to still focus on word choices that convey a strong sense of the mood. This could be a paragraph that instills a sense of hope, or, if nothing else, a sense of growth and change.
Three short paragraphs.
