I chose to write about an article regarding the corporate rebranding of Facebook. As I am sure most of you have seen, Facebook is changing its name to Meta. This is Facebook’s leap in the direction of virtual and augmented reality, something we see as extremely futuristic technology. Metaverse will essentially be an alternate reality where users can do everyday activities via their own personal avatar. To me this is a weird concept because it seems more of a video game than anything. However, after talking with some people educated on this subject, I have learned that Metaverse can also be used to unite remote workers, for example. This would give a real-life work environment vibe to those not actually working together in a physical building. Obviously, there are endless applications for Metaverse, and what I mentioned is just an example. In this article, it talks about how Zuckerberg says Metaverse will be the “successor to the mobile internet.” This is a bold statement to be made, and it shows us how big of a deal this will be, not only for Zuckerberg, but for the entire world. Facebook and all its’ subsidiaries make up a huge portion of the online and social media world, which means a big change for them will affect society in a very big way. Facebook, or Meta, is still dealing with some legal and morality battles regarding privacy, protection, censorship, and accountability. However, Meta aims to take the organization in a new direction away from this drama. Although Zuckerberg has assured us that Metaverse will be extremely safe and privacy focused, how sure of this can we be? The same things have been said before about current platforms, which were later found to be untrue. This is my biggest critique of the whole Metaverse platform. Once fully incorporated, Meta will have access to significantly more privacy data among other things. It will be very easy for them to misuse their platform and power to control and influence the population. This may seem a little far-fetched, but it’s something to keep in the back of your mind. Meta will need to be held accountable at very high levels if they plan on digging deeper into the personal lives of our society. Lastly, Zuckerberg mentions non-fungible tokens (NFT’s) and cryptocurrencies in conjunction with Metaverse. This is some good evidence that both things are here to stay and will play a big role in the future of our world. I am curious as to what you all think about the topics mentioned in this discussion post, feel free to give me your thoughts, questions, comments, and concerns.
