Social Networking Service: A Blessing or a Curse?
Social networking service may negatively affect a person’s behavior. How has social networking service negatively impacted communication? Indiscriminate use of social networking service affects people both psychologically and sociologically. This leads people to experience anxiety disorder and lack of the ability to express the ideas and emotions to others face-to-face. Forms of such things like instant messaging and chat rooms are called social networking service, also known as ‘SNS.’ SNS shifted the way people communicate, but also affects behavior negatively. Nevertheless, since people live in the world where every single word is sent by technology, living without it seems impossible. The issue is, do e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, and other forms of online communication bring people closer together? Even though modern technology makes people’s life better, it slowly enslaves them little by little; people can’t live without it anymore. To this end, there should be strict regulation established of use of social networking service.
Nowadays, instead of physically seeing social connections on a regular basis, social networking service has become preferred way of meeting people. Technology is getting people more closer by virtual means, but as humans people still seek actual social interaction. Daniel Newman reports “Networks like Facebook and YouTube both exceeding a billion monthly active users it has completely redefined the way we build and maintain relationships. Further it has found its way into our offices, living rooms and even at our dinner tables…Adults spend 20-28 hours a week on social media and on average have 275 personal connections across their social media channels” (4 Technology Trends Disrupting). Here the author affirms that people spend their time with social networking service indiscriminately. Technology brought our communication process to whole different new level; it made our communication process a lot easier and faster. However it affects people’s behavior negatively. That is, instead of choosing to go play outdoors, people are choosing sedentary lifestyles sitting in front of the computers. Maybe because people live in a busy world such as this, the number of people who prefer to communicate with others via technology is still growing.
First of all, social networking service left us emotionally drained. People prefer communicating with friends and family through e-mail and texting rather than communicating by letters because of its convenience. Andrew Leonard insists that forms of such things like e-mail and texting made our communication process emotionless. The following passage shows how e-mail and instant messaging make our communication process emotionless. He writes, “So instead of creating something new, we forward something old. Instead of crafting the perfect phrase, we use a brain-dead abbreviation: imho for In My Humble Opinion, or rotflmao, for Rolling On The Floor Laughing My A– Off” (We’ve Got Mail). Most people send e-mail instead of actual letter; it is not very common today one receives a handwritten letter from others. Instead, texting, instant messaging, Facebook, e-mail and many other ways are used to communicate with people quickly. A letter is special, sentimental, and meaningful when it is handwritten. It has someone’s effort and thought in it. Older generations tell that stories of receiving letters from their loved one while they were away at war. To this day, some of the people still have those love letters in their possession. For this reason, Andrew Leonard states that sometimes old fashion is better than rely on technology. It is a blessing and also a curse; it helps people to keep in touch with others all the time, otherwise they wouldn’t keep in contact with. Unfortunately, this is not the only negative effect of technology on communication.
Moreover, lack of interpersonal communication has reduced the nonverbal grasping power of individuals. Impact on interpersonal communication is one of the prominent negative effects of technology on communication. Susan Tardanico argues that increased frequency of communication through texting and chatting cause lack of the ability to express the ideas and emotions to others face-to-face. For example, she writes, “With 93% of our communication context stripped away, we are now attempting to forge relationships and make decisions based on phrases. Abbreviations. Snippets. Emoticons. Which may or may not be accurate representations of the truth” (Is Social Media Sabotaging). People use their nonverbal cues, such as a smile or a frown when they communicate with others face-to-face and this is another layer of communication. But technology doesn’t allow people to catch these sorts of nonverbal cues. This leads people to misunderstand the actual meaning of what others intend to say. There is the potential for greater richness in face-to-face interaction because people lose the body cues and facial expressions when they’re doing work on the internet. Therefore, Susan Tardanico emphasizes technology causes lack of interpersonal communication. People spend much more time on communicating with others via texting and chatting and this causes lack of the ability to express their emotions and ideas face-to-face. Besides interpersonal communication problem, another negativity of technology on communication is social isolation.
Lastly, Facebook and Twitter, the most widely used social networking services now can affect person’s behavior psychologically. People have become addicted to cellphones and the internet, and this addiction has led to many anxiety disorders. CBS Seattle claims that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed. In the article, Nicky Ledbetter, CEO of Anxiety UK said “We were surprised by the high proportion of people who found that the only way to ensure a break from the demands of their devices was to switch them off, as they were not capable of simply ignoring them” (qtd. in Facebook, Twitter Affects Behavior Negatively). The news goes into detail that behaviors such as having trouble being able to disconnect and relax, spending too much time in front of a computer and comparing themselves to others could be referred to as anxiety disorders. The study found that 45 percent of people who surveyed answered they feel uncomfortable and insecure when they have no internet access. Unfortunately, social networking service is easy, convenient, and even attractive. They have made it possible to keep in touch with others wherever and whenever people want; which means it’s hard to get rid of them. Taken as a whole, CBS Seattle maintains that social networking service can affect people feel more insecure and uncomfortable. This scientific studies show that some people who use the internet a lot feel more isolated than before. However, the problem probably is, people who abuses social networking service too much, not Facebook or Twitter.
On the other hand, some people maintain that technology can help further relationships. Long distance couples, such as college students attending different Universities use Skype, Facebook, and their cellphones to keep in touch with their significant others. Laurel Storm states that technological advances are making communication across long distances easier, and they have brought the world closer. Furthermore, she write, “Telegrams are faster than letters; phone calls, in turn, are faster than telegrams, as well as easier and more pleasant, since they require no go-between and allow users to hear each other’s voice. Cell phones take this one step further, allowing people to call and speak with each other regardless of their location” (Positive Effects of Technology). Online communication of all types is the most efficient yet, with email being a near-instantaneous version of the paper letter. Nevertheless, in spite of this positive effect of technology on communication, there are much more aspects that technology affects a person’s behavior negatively. Writing skills of today are significantly decreasing due to the excessive usage of online chatting and shortcuts. As time goes by, people are relying more and more on digital communication that they have totally forgot about improving their writing skills. They don’t know the spelling of different words, how to use grammar properly or how to do cursive writing. In addition, it is undeniable that the advancement of technology has brought us a completely unique method of interaction and communication. Unfortunately, dependence on technology is increasing day by day; people are interacting with others through different platforms like apps, social networks, and etc. Because of these facts, people are forgetting how to interact with others when they meet them in person or what gesture they should carry. Consequentially, technology has hampered the physical interaction skills of many people.
All in all, from these undeniable aspects, people should manage their time on using social networking service effectively. People are always connected to the world and able to keep in touch with people they love. Today, wireless internet access is everywhere– readily available in homes, schools, and even on airplanes. However, communication through texting and chatting cause lack of the ability to express the ideas and emotions to others face-to-face. Also, social networking services can affect person’s behavior negatively. Finally, e-mail and texting made our communication process easier, but made it emotionless at the same time. Nevertheless, it all depends on how people use them right. If people don’t stop abusing, they also won’t stop enslaving us and the day people can’t live without them will surely come. Overall all three sources present an effective argument using evidence that makes sense for their particular perspective and audience.
