Comparative Thesis and Argument Essay
Choose a topic (and a primary source) and use standard research strategies learned in the course to find at least three scholarly secondary sources (i.e. journal articles, book chapters, scholarly books, etc.) to help you formulate a comparative thesis and argument. Essays should be 2500-3000 words in length, plus a properly formatted Works Cited. Research essays should be MLA format: 12 pt. book font, double-spaced, and without a title page. Essays are expected to be polished, edited, and free from typographical mistakes when they are handed in (on Canvas and on Turnitin).
- State of the Question Option
This is a paper that consists of a complete, systematic, objective, impartial, and sufficiently abbreviated and clear presentation of the main existing results in the investigations about a problem or topic. Here, you would construct an argument about existing arguments surrounding a myth/topic. *This option may be the better choice if you are discussing an event or a person (example, a historical moment or a “real” serial killer, rather than an event or person as depicted by a film or text).
- Creative Option
You may choose a creative project instead of a research essay. If you wish to take this option, you may implement a “creative” methodology to accompany a “critical” one but be certain to situate your work within the critical discussions we have in class. In this case, you may create a film, a work of creative writing, a photographic essay, etc. that substantiates and develops the topic you are researching. However, this approach will also require a (shorter) critical essay that fully discusses your research and explicitly states the ways in which you see your creative project furthering discussions we have in class. The aims and methodology of your creative project must be made clear in the critical portion of your project. Your creative piece should be the equivalent of 2000-2500 words plus a 1000-1500-word critical essay.
There is an option available for you to hand in a first draft of your paper on March 30th in order to receive feedback from your GTA and/or professor before the final due date.

The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format.
