In the above prompt, Company G has the ethical dilemma of saving money or saving jobs. Such a dilemma comes down to who the company has more of an obligation to: the shareholder or the stakeholder.
In recent years, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become more and more prevalent when making such ethical decisions. CSR is a way for a company to hold itself socially accountable by contributing to the public or economy (Schooley, 2021). This self regulation has become of particular importance because customers have began to place a premium on spending their money with businesses who prioritize CSR (Schooley, 2021).
Whether or not Company G should start buying from Company F and layoff workers depends on their financial situation. If they are in dire straights and will go bankrupt without cutting costs, then I think that they should go through with the layoffs. However, if they do not need to save money to stay in business, then their reputation will most likely be tarnished from such extreme measures. In my opinion, Company G should run a cost benefit analysis to see what option produces more net benefit. However, at the end of the day, companies owe more to their shareholders than their stakeholders so they should error on the side of the shareholder.

This situation is a difficult one. On one hand, saving money for the company is ultimately the goal of the companies accountant. on the other hand, the ethical dilemma of destroying thousands of people to lose their source of income causes pause. The first step should be to find any other way to cheaply purchase the components for its product. This could mean utilizing cheaper materials or outsourcing to international factories.
Even if this option doesn’t work, I don’t think that the company should purchase the component from company F. The cons vastly outweigh the pros in this scenario. Though companies want to save money, the negative impact on the community with this one decision wouldn’t be worth it. The company may even receive backlash from the investors/community as a consequence, which would negatively impact it in the long run.

There is an old quote that says that the main purpose of a company is to make profit for its shareholders. Although many still believe and defend this quote, I think that this is no longer updated with the actual world scenario. Of course, that no company survives without profit. However, I believe that companies exist to attend to all stakeholders’ expectations and not only shareholders. This means that companies exist to attend also employees, customers, suppliers, communities, and governments. That said, solutions that would please only one of the stakeholders and harm others should be avoided by companies. The closing of a factory, for example, may improve the profits of the company’s shareholders but besides the elimination of thousands of jobs, it would harm suppliers, local government, and the local community. I would say that decisions like that should only be taken if the existence of the company is under threat and there is nothing else that can be done to save the company.
