Attached are the readings and instructions.
For the final essay, there are some formal criteria.
In this brief note, I will briefly review the formal criteria for the final essay. (We go through this in greater depth in class.)
To begin, you have the option of working in pairs or alone. If you want to work in a group but can’t find anyone to join you, I’ll gladly pair you up with someone who has expressed interest in the same way. Send me an e-mail by February 2 to declare your interest, and I’ll assign groups immediately after that.
If you are working with another person, please write a 12-15 page essay; if you are working alone, please write a 10-15 page essay. (Students who work alone are eligible for only this discount.)
Graphs are counted on a five-line basis. Please do not go over the upper bound of the pages by too much, since I need to be able to compare the different articles, therefore the upper bound is vital. The essay’s bottom bound is tight; anything less will result in deductions, especially if the content suffers.
Please make certain that your essay contains the following information:
12 point font size (except for headers; please use built in headers if possible)
Approximately one inch of margins
Lines that are fully justified (ctrl – j in MS Word)
1.5 line spacing
Every page has a page number (but see point 6 below!)
A separate title page (preferably not numbered) containing your name and the essay’s title is necessary. (This page does not count toward your total number of pages.)
If you’re sending your work by email (which is highly advised), choose a file name that includes your last name (as opposed to just a generic name like essay or draft)Points about the content:
Please divide your final essay into sections. Introduction, Analysis, Discussion / Conclusion, and References should all be included. Sections and subsections should be numbered.
Please double-check that the reader can find the references (check whether the URL is still valid, etc.). Each reference should appear in the main text (or footnote) and in the references at least twice. The references should be listed alphabetically (use the last name of the first author to order your list).
Please be aware of which sources we deem trustworthy and citable, as well as which sources should be double-checked or avoided. (Blogs, Wikipedias, and the like)
Remember that your essay (and especially your Intro) is directed at your fellow students as well as the educated public who have taken Introductory Economics / Microeconomics.money, and have a rudimentary understanding of the Internet. For example, don’t assume that everyone understands all there is to know about eBay; instead, assume that the reader has a general understanding of the site.
The deadline for submitting an essay proposal is February 29th.
The proposal format can be more flexible. It doesn’t matter how long it is as long as:
You have an excellent Introduction Section that discusses the problem and why you believe the topic you chose is significant (intellectual merit, financial importance, methodological contribution or novelty value can each be sufficient for our purposes).
Make a list of a few references (maybe around a list of five)
Please make sure you come up with a good question that isn’t too wide in your selected topic. If you are unsure about a topic or have a question, please send me an email and I would gladly discuss it with you, or come by during my office hours.
The proposal outlines the approach you want to apply (literature review, personal experience, analysis, data collection, etc.). Also, try to persuade the reader that the approach you’ve chosen will suffice to answer your main question (s).
Make sure to include a list of references that you’ve studied and want to use in your final essay; there’s no need to go over every work on the list in your proposal.
Optional: if you have any expectations regarding the outcomes or conclusions you will reach, please state them in your proposal.
Please use a file name that includes your last name if you submit your idea via e-mail (which is advised) (as opposed to just a generic name like essay or draft)Here are some examples of prior year’s essay titles:
