Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. and Christopher Columbus are the only non-presidential figures to be honored with a federal holiday? Allow a moment for that fact to sink in. - The other person is Christopher Columbus, who is either celebrated as a heroic modern navigator who defied all odds and “discovered” the Americas or a greedy murderous pirate who spread colonialism and genocide. Martin Luther King Jr. is a Southern preacher and an iconic civil rights hero who protested against segregation and racism through nonviolence. Because of the latter, Columbus Day has come under fire in recent decades, as many people, particularly historians, have begun to separate the man from the myth, accusing him of spreading violence, racism, and eventually genocide. As a way to raise awareness of Native Americans, many communities and more than 27 states across America have abolished Columbus Day as a holiday and replaced it with “Indigenous Day.” Some states and people, on the other hand, continue to honor Christopher Columbus and wonder if taking away their right to do so will result in any effective and positive changes. So, where do you stand on the Columbus Day debate?
