For Kate Chopin and Upton Sinclair, the American Dream is the lack of ability (or opportunity) for a person to make a life for him or herself through hard work and sacrifice. This, they seem to argue, is impossible for many women or immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century. Women could rarely own property or take employment; poor immigrants become trapped in cycles of poverty that did not allow them to experience real freedom.
If the promise of America is in the ability of working people to achieve individual success, how do women and working class individuals have opportunities today that did not exist a hundred years ago?

Even though there isn’t perfect or even equal opportunities for women and working class individuals today, it definitely has increased from along ago. First I will start with women. A hundred years ago, women pretty much grew up just to get forced to marry some man, sometimes they didn’t even get a choice or say and may not have even really knew the man, and were made to have children and be a stay at home mom. They lived to take care of the kids, clean the house, make dinner, and just take care of everyone’s needs before themselves. Women also didn’t have rights, and couldn’t vote, own property, and were not really allowed to have an education or work. Today, most women are not only allowed to be home and care for everyone else. WOmen can now vote and own property and have gained even further rights. A Lot of women are out there working really good jobs as well. Some barriers still exist however such as still unequalness to men such as unequal pay, and other rights such as abortion. Working class individuals also have reached some success as well since the last hundred years. Back then, the working class suffered harsh conditions. They worked in unsanitary and dangerous conditions and many became sick, were injured, or even lost their lives. They also worked very long hours to receive little pay. While fast forward a hundred years it may seem like sometimes with some jobs its still the same, things have gotten better. There have become lots of laws now that have forced sanitary and safety rules. However the pay factor has still been an issue for some. Some still struggle to work long hours to feed their families. It seem that unless you have a a high paying job, it can be as a struggle to live with the average pay.
