A 35-year-old Caucasian mother named Cassie was separated from her two children after losing custody of them. For the last 12 months, Cassie has been drug-free. Because she missed her children, Cassie spent six months in prison for breaking into a convenience store. It was while she was incarcerated for six months that she began to recover.
The custody of Cassie’s 12-year-old son, Austin, and her 8-year-old daughter, Amber, is being supervised by their respective parents. Austin and Amber have different fathers, as well as different fathers. They were both placed in the care of the DCS for custodial and legal support, but they have spent the past five years living with their grandparents. It’s important for her to call both of her children on a weekly basis and to write to them as well. Austin does not disappoint his mother, but Amber fails to reply to her mother’s letters or phone calls.
The dads of the two children don’t play any role in their lives. However, Austin’s grandparents, who are his parents’ parents, take him every other weekend and Amber has gone on weekend visitations a couple of times. Austin has met his cousins and relatives, and he attends school with them. The Austin family’s grandparents are very involved in their church and their grandchildren are pleased with Sunday school classes, church picnics, and communicating with their church friends on a weekly basis. Both of the children have been doing very well in school. Austin goes to the Little League with his grandparents, and Amber plays soccer.
An employee of the DCS in D.C. has been assigned to assist the residents of Austin and Amber. Although Cassie and her children appear to be developing well, as demonstrated by good school grades and social adjustment, Lyndia believes it is time for the family to be unified. While Amber’s grandparents express some concern about Amber’s hostility toward her mother, Amber adamantly denies it. While working together with Lyndia, the grandparents are trying to bring everyone together, but they have to act in the best interests of the children.
