Assignment Brief:

You are requested to write as an academic essay. I have uploaded some recommended

are strictly prohibited). Failure to meet the above citation requirements will be deducted 5%
of the total grade.
Specific instructions for the assignment:
PART A: Essay (3,000 words)
Your essay should be written as a critical review or debate surrounding your chosen title
(e.g. a debate discussing evidence for and against different issues and one view/theory
against another). Your discussion should therefore be closely linked to the literature and
your reading – not contain what you think! You will be required to write this in ‘academic
speak’ which means you should not personalise this writing (do not use I) but write in the
third person.
Choose ONE of the following essay topics(have done during the class):
We live in a knowledge society and the industrialised world no longer has a monopoly on
knowledge. Competition for jobs is high and it is suggested that: – Individual
Competitiveness (employability) = what you know (your distinctive knowledge/skill) x who
you know1 (your networks). Discuss.
Carroll’s definition of CSR breaks CSR into 4 responsibilities: economic, legal, ethical and
philanthropic. Discuss and give examples of how HRM can contribute to each type of
responsibility within a 21st century organisation. (You should research organisations and
give examples to these 4 responsibilities ). (This is the topic I chosen)
Discuss how responsible leadership within HRM could positively influence a climate of
authenticity and autonomy within an Organisation.
PART B: Reflexive Report (500 words)
Answer the following questions:
Why did you choose the specific essay question (subject/topic area) for Part A? (Because
choosing the topic was done in class. For me, the main reason I chose this topic is because of
interest.)
In your opinion, what is the importance of this subject / topic area for the study of
contemporary management and organisations?
How has writing the essay in Part A helped you think differently about organisations, your
career and your employment future?
