Carl Robins Case Study
A new outlook to handle problems at work other than give up on yourself. In this case study of Carl Robins, you will see some problems Carl had, and how he deals with a new work assignment. Carl needs a new approach to help with his problems. Carl has a new job, and this is his first time organizing a new hire orientation. Carl waits until the last minute to start on the assignment.
The Background
Carl made his first recruitment for his new job in the middle of April. Carl did a great job with 15 new recruits. He wanted all the new hires working by July. Carl did not follow up with each new recruit after the first contact. Carl waited to the end of May to begin working on the orientation. This only gave him 15 days to solve any problems that may arise. Carl assured Monica Carrolls everything would be ready for the orientation when she asked about it during the middle of May. Carl went for a walk when he found all the issues instead of dealing the problems.
Key Problems
Carl had a lot to complete, but he did not start when he was first given the new hire issues. Monica Carrolls the Operations Supervisor Contacted Carl May 15 to ask about the orientation issues. He agreed to everything without checking about any issues he may come across. Carl did nothing about the issues for two weeks. This was seven weeks for the issues to be worked out by Carl. He had not checked on the new hires folders. Some of the new hires did not have a completed application, transcripts, physical, or mandatory drug testing completed. Carl also had been tasked with the orientation manuals that would be needed for the first day.
Carl needed to have them ready for every new hire. Carl could only find three books, and all of the books had pages missing. Carl also needed a place to hold the meeting. Carl found the meeting place for the orientation was already booked for the month. He went for a walk to help him clear his head. When he returned to his office Carl panicked, and put his head down on the desk. Carl needed a game plan to fix the problems he had, but was at a loss on what he could do. Instead of thinking of a way to help with the issues Carl went for a walk, because he did not know how to correct the issues he found.
Alternative Solutions
Carl needed a plan from day one, but he did not have one. The alternative to panicking when problems arise is to have a plan to complete issues, and have a time limit when they needed to be finished. Carl waited too long to begin the research to complete the orientation issues. Carl should have started when he first knew a date for the orientation was first set. He needed a place for the meeting, and also a back-up location in case of over booking. This would have taken care of the meeting room being booked up.
Carl should have contacted the new hires one at a time to go over the files he needed to be completed before orientation. This would have been an easy solution to keeping them from being an incomplete file. Contacting each person would take time. Carl needed to do this as soon as a date was set for the new hires to begin work. This would give Carl about six weeks or more to finish everything he would need finished.
The orientation manuals Carl located were missing pages in the only three he could find. Carl needed at least fifteen manuals. He should have known where to locate the extra manuals. If problems came up he would need a contact person to ask for help with the issues. Carl is only one person, and new to this job. He should have ask for help or known who to ask if help was needed. As a company more than one person has done this same job before Carl. Several people should have been able to help if Carl had asked for it.
Carl needs to find a printing store to copy the manuals, and make sure he has all the pages in the manuals. If Carl has to order the manuals this will be more time he will have to push back the orientation date. He needs to locate the policy booklets, and make sure he has to amount he will need for the new hires. Carl could reschedule the new hire orientation. He would have to push back the planned start date for the new hires as well.
Proposed Solutions
Carl first needs to tell Monica Carrolls the truth about the issues he has with the start of the new hires. Carl needs to push the orientation back by at least 21 days. This will also push the new hires start dates back to August. Carl needs to reserve the room needed for the orientation now to make sure the room will be available to him. He will also need to look into an alternative location also for back-up.
Carl needs to start calling the new hires one by one to make appointments to go over their files. He could also schedule all physicals, and drug testing during his contact with the new hires. This would also allow Carl to have the new hires bring in everything he will need to complete their files.
Carl needs to talk to his supervisor about the orientation manuals missing pages. This way he can get the issue corrected. This needs to be finished fast to stay on track with the new dates set. Carl may need to look for classes or programs to help him with his time management. Also Carl needs to focus on completing tasks when they are first given to him. This will lead to less procrastination on his part. If Carl does run into issues he will still have the time to correct them without panicking.
Conclusion
Carl needs to better plan for orientations for new hires. If he waits until the last minute to start looking into what needs to be completed he may not make the dead line. Carl knew about the issues seven weeks before the start of the new hires. He panicked when he found out everything that was needed, and he was going not going to be able to complete everything on time. Carl did not ask anyone for help.
Do to Carl’s lack of completing tasks he will have to push the new hire orientation back three or more weeks. This will also push the date back for the new hires to begin work. Carl will have to explain to everyone why the class has to be pushed back. This should be a learning curve for Carl. This is not the good start he had with the recruiting event. Carl needs to prove he can do this job.
