Business Forum Responses to Classmates Assignment
I need a 125 word reply to each of the following forum postings by my classmates:
Forum #1
For centuries a business was defined by how profitable it was, ultimately measured by the dividends passed through to its stockholders. The concept of capitalism focuses on the ability of industries to create trade for profit. The focus has always been on the bottom line and not the members of the organization whose efforts contribute to profitability of that organization. Many of these businesses thought that the concept of being people focused was unrelated to profitability. I couldn’t disagree more with that. According to Kitner and Kinicki (2013), “only 12% of today’s organizations have the systematic approaches and persistence to qualify as true people-centered organizations” (p.4).
These companies apply the concepts of organizational behavior and conscious capitalism. Organizational behavior applies the concept that focusing on the needs of the members of the organization can drastically affect their profits. This concept is very simple. Happier employees will work harder, enjoy the work they perform, and feel a sense of connectivity to the mission of their organization. This is ultimately transferred to the customer.
Conscious capitalism is another theory that focuses on more than just the bottom line. Mackey and Sisodia (2013) state, “conscious businesses are galvanized by higher purposes that serve, align and integrate the interests of all their major stakeholders” (p.3). This is demonstrated by the culture that the organization creates for its employees and how it contributes to the communities in which it does business. Several companies have applied these concepts and have proven that being people focused directly correlates to its profitability.
One company that demonstrates having a higher purpose is USAA. USAA follows a set of core values to ensure they fulfill their mission to all members of the military. They do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. Their members know that the company and its employees have their best financial interests at heart, not just the profitability of the organization. Another company that highlights the concepts surrounding focusing on employees is American Express. They decided to focus on their call center employees by improving their lives. Kreitner and Kinicki (2013), showed that American Express learned “Happier employees mean happier employees…We’ve learned the importance of the attitude of the employee…delivered better pay, flexible schedules, and more career development…collectively the moves have boosted service margins 10%” (p.20). These two companies have proven that focusing on the employees of the organization positively influence their profit margins.

In reviewing the Skills Exhibited by an Effective Manager table 1-2, I feel that my strengths lie in “Encouraging participation, upward communication, and suggestions. This best describes my strength because of my sports and music background. I have always worked better with a functional team. My philosophy is that everyone has something that they bring to the table and if you do what you do best with the team as the big picture, we will reach our goal. I am the type of manager that likes to let my team play their roles to the fullest.
I allow people to either grow or commit suicide withing the team by giving them room to operate. I do not believe in micro managing my people, I like to give the power to make their own decisions about the direction of what they contribute to the whole operation. I have learned that the magic is in selecting the right people to work with you that share your vision and respects the direction of the organization/team. In music and in sports, you have to be able to rely on your teammates to do what their perspective jobs intel. If the drummer of the band could not play his part correctly, the band sounds bad not just the drummer. The reality of business is…you can’t do it all alone. It takes a functional team to succeed and I spend a lot of time trying to empower my team.
However, I need to develop my ability to “keep things moving by relying on schedules, deadlines, and helpful reminders.” I am notorious for being easily distracted, so I have to have help keeping deadlines, sticking to schedules. Because I try to multi task, some things get overlooked and even forgotten. I also need to develop a better system to plan and organize my workflow. I have been the type of manager that likes to memorize things as opposed to writing things down in an organized manner. I am positive that these skills are needed to be a more effective manager and I am striving to overcome my weaknesses. i am eager to improve in all aspects of my career and I have committed myself to being a Life-Long Learner (LLL). At all career stages, derailed managers (those who failed to achieve their potential) tended to be the ones who overestimated their skill mastery (rated themselves higher tha their employees did) (Kreitner &Kinicki, 2013 p.17).
