BPACE Plato Verdicts Poetry and Art Essay
There are five different topics on which you can write. Please choose one that appeals to you most. This is a fairly short essay, 4 pages, double-spaced. It’s a think piece in which you tease out the ideas about art as they relate to the specific readings.
Topic 1:
In envisioning an ideal city-state, Plato decided that “We show now be right not to admit him
[painter or poet] into a potentially well-governed city…” (Book 10, 605) Using Ion and the excerpts from
the Republic as your sources, explain why and how he reaches this conclusion. And do you feel as if his
argument has merit.Topic 2:
Leon Battista Alberti uses the term historia as his standard for the most moving paintings, which
would be narrative and depict highly “elevated” subjects with dignity. The synonymous terms, in later
readings, are history painting and painting in the grand manner. Compare what Alberti has to say about
this type of painting, in Books II and II of On Painting and what Nicolas Poussin and Antoine Coypel write
on this subject in the selections we read. Do they largely agree or do they differ in their views of what
makes for a compelling painting in this vein?Topic 3:
Beauty is a recurring subject in the writings we have encountered. While Leon Battista Alberti
follows Aristotle’s notion of imitating nature and learning from it, he also advises, “The early painter
Demetrius failed to obtain the highest praise because he was more devoted to representing the likeness
of things than to beauty. Therefore, excellent parts should all be selected from the most beautiful
bodies, and every effort should be made to perceive, understand and express beauty” (On Painting, 90).
So, for him, beauty involved idealizing nature. How does this concept of beauty compare with
discussions of it by Nicolas Poussin, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Voltaire? (Feel free to choose two of
these rather than all three for your essay, if you prefer.)Topic 4:
Blaise Pascal and Joseph Addison both have expansive views of the powers of the imagination.
Compare their discussions of it. And do you find one writing more compelling than the other?Topic 5:
Taste is a word that gets a spotlight in two of the writers we have encountered: Gottfried
Wilhelm Leibniz and David Hume. Does each of them have similar or different takes on what taste is?
And do their views of it still seem relevant today?
