The Assignment: You are to select a microorganism from the available list provided by your instructor during week 8. Only one person may present a particular microorganism, and the first person to select a microorganism will get priority.
If you select a microorganism that has already been chosen you will have to choose another one. You will research the organism and put together an informational brochure (the micro brochure) like those you may have seen in the doctor’s office. See some good websites to start with on the next page. ‘
The format of the brochure is up to the student and it may be partially hand made. A double-sided trifold brochure is the most common format. Students may turn in a separate page with references if they wish. Color printing is not required as long as images used are visible in black and white. Students may in addition to handing in a print copy may email the instructor the file as well. You will do a 5-to-10-minute presentation based upon your research.
These will begin as noted on the course schedule on week 12 and will be done in no particular order. One or more students will be chosen each day to present at the beginning of class time. Presentations will conclude the end of week 15. You should be ready to present on the day your micro brochure is due. Your presentation must start as a case study “story.” See examples on the next page. Information on the brochure should include, if applicable:
The organism: include genus and species, history of the disease Classification: type of organism, any unique or unusual structures Growth and reproduction: temperature, pH and oxygen requirements, unusual growth requirements Process of infection: name of disease, reservoir, transmission route, pattern of disease, predisposing factors (who is at risk?)
pathogenesis (symptoms, damage to the host, avoidance of host defenses), most recent yearly number of cases Defense: action of the nonspecific defense system (phagocytes, cytokines, etc.), response of antibodies and/or T cells Identification: laboratory diagnosis (type of test, clinical specimen) Disease control: response to drugs, vaccination, other measures of control References:
