I’m working on a history multi-part question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
For Discussion Board #2, write three (3) posts where you address any of the following three questions about the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Salem Witchcraft Trials, and New England Puritan society. Your first post will be a response to one of the three questions and then once you enter the forum, you may create your two remaining posts with either
- a) two posts that answer the two remaining questions
- b) one post answering one of the two remaining question plus one reply to another student post
These posts rely upon historical content from three online lectures: “Elizabethan England and Early English Colonization,” “Pilgrims and Plymouth Colony,” and “Colonial New England in the 17th Century.” The most effective and insightful posts will draw upon information and context from these lectures.
Here are your three questions:
1) Based on the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke covered in the online lecture “Elizabethan England and Early English Colonization,” what do you believe happened to the missing colonists? Offer your best reasoning and explanation with insightful support.
2) The Salem Witchcraft Trials (1692) serves as a great cautionary tale about community fears and the experience of living through the damaging effects of a “witch hunt.” Still today, historians, authors, and the general public still debate why this event happened in Salem Village.
From what you learned in the online lecture “Colonial New England in the 17th Century,” provide your interpretation why the girls exhibited their physically symptoms and accused others in the community of being witches. Did they appear bored and were looking for attention?
Did they appear to be malevolent and vengeful in their accusations? Did they appear really to believe they were under the spell of witches? Did they appear to be acting out in a stressful or repressive environment? Or do you believe this is something unknowable and why?
To help with your interpretation, I’ve provided writer Kathy Weiser’s brief biographies of the afflicted Salem Village girls in a Word file in the “Discussion Board Questions” module. These biographies will help you learn more about the girls’ lives and in turn create more informed and insightful posts.
3) The New England Puritans are the best example of people leaving England for America to practice and enjoy religious freedom. Yet Puritan society also built a community based on theocratic principles of religious law, governing bodies, and punishment to ensure everyone honors the covenant with God.
In this post, try to disentangle this paradox with how the Puritans represent both religious freedom and religious tyranny? Among the positions, you can take include, do you believe New England Puritan society does in fact exemplify religious freedom? How and why? Or do you believe there was no religious freedom in the Puritan community? Use good insight for this response.
