Attributes of Effective Leadership Discussion Paper
Attributes, Effective, Leadership, Discussion, Paper
When responding to at least two of your peers’ posts, consider the following:
· Compare and contrast your learning from the course with that of your peers.
· How do your views on the attributes of an effective leader align with those of your
peers?
Peer 1:
As I think about my personal brand, the first thing that comes to mind is wanting to be
known as someone who is self-aware. Having a high level of self-awareness is what will
lead to the realization of the areas that I am strong in, as well as the areas that I need to
continue to develop.
I will be able to develop those skill sets by continuing on as a lifelong learning, taking
the opportunity to continue to grow both personally and professionally. Beyond that, I
also want to be seen as a leader who is trustworthy, reliable, competent,
compassionate, authentic and patient centric. Much of these attributes are what I
consider needed to be an effective leader, which is always my goal.
Walking away from this course, I am thankful to have learned more about the dynamics
of marketing, specifically how to engage your target audience. Additionally, I
appreciated learning more about public relations and mitigating crisis, as well as
strengthening my communication skills via written plans and presentations.
All of this is relative to the work that I currently do, as well as my continued career goals.
Challenging situations present themselves all of the time, though it's the way that they
are managed and communicated that truly make a difference. Being transparent and
responsive will bode better than trying to cover things up!
Peer 2:
Hello Class,
Congrats on us all making it to the finish line! I have really enjoyed this course more
than I was expecting. My background and current job are all in Accounting/Finance so I
was nervous how well I would comprehend complex marketing techniques and how it
would benefit me in my career, but I have definitely grown and learned a lot. My next
goal is to move up to a management/leadership role in my department and through this
class I was able to gain valuable skills to help me on that journey.
One of the most helpful takeaways from this course includes identifying what I want my
personal brand to be and how to present myself in line with it. I’ve also gained valuable
presentation skills through our various assignments that have made me more
comfortable preparing and presenting to my team and stakeholders in my current role.
Additionally, the HubSpot Marketing Certification gave me a skill that I can add to my
resume to make me more well-rounded and help set me apart during my career growth.
When it comes to effective leaders, there are several attributes that I believe they must
possess. While of course leaders must have the technical competencies, the most
important leadership qualities involve soft skills rather than technical knowledge or
industry-specific experience, making leadership traits critical in nearly every occupation
(Indeed Editorial Team, 2021).
These traits are personal brand traits that make employees respect and appreciate
their leaders, while having a relationship deeper than just a boss who tells them what to
do. Some examples of these soft skill traits are humility, teamwork, empathy and
integrity.
My desired brand as a leader involves having strong emotional intelligence. I really
want to be able to connect with my employees on a personal level and have empathy
and understanding, while being someone they can trust. I have had experience with a
leader who was only results focused, had unrealistic expectations, and would always
call out small things that were not done while never appreciating all the major
accomplishments.
Under this leader, my team and I were stressed and underappreciated. I now have a
complete opposite leader who does want us to produce our best results, but he shows
more connection and understanding along the way, motivating us to perform higher.
That is an example of a leader I want to become.
I want to be a motivator who praises others when they do well, but can also provide
constructive criticism when needed. Being a lifelong learner to me involves humility,
and admitting that just because I am in a leadership position, I am not better than
everyone else and still have room to grow, especially in areas of emotional intelligence.
