Assignment 2 Communication Research Methods, Fall 2017
Basic Information
- Length: 1,250 words (not including the reference section and appendix), double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins.
- Sources: Five scholarly sources are required. You may add more if you wish.
- Due date: See the syllabus.
- Submission: Online using Blackboard, in the “Assignment Submission and Info.” section. Do not submit a hardcopy.
Overview
In this assignment you will conduct a literature review using five scholarly sources, formulate a research question, select public social media content posted by a public figure or organization, and use a qualitative approach to analyze the content.
Important: In this assignment you must ONLY examine public social media content from a public figure or organization. You must NOT correspond or interact with the public figure or organization that you are studying. If you need to sign up or log in to a social media platform to access any content, it is not public. If anyone posting the content would have any reasonable expectation that it was not public, it is not public. Public figures would include politicians, celebrities, or business leaders. Organizations would include political parties, companies, or non-profit organizations.
If you have any questions about whether the social media content that you want to study is posted by a public figure or organization, post a question under the “Questions” section of Blackboard.
The social media content that you select for your analysis should be a minimum of 250 words worth of text. The content may include visual material, however, you must describe all included material in the appendix.
Format and Requirements
At the top of the first page provide your name, student number, date, and the title of your paper. Do not include a title page.
Next, provide the following subheadings with the requested discussion. It is up to you to determine the length of each section. It is recommended that you keep each section as short and succinct as possible, while still addressing each of the items outlined below.
- Literature Review
- Use five scholarly sources to craft an argument that leads you to your research question. If you are unsure what counts as a “scholarly” source or how to find this type of source, review the online library research module or ask a librarian.
- Scholarly sources should be cited using APA format.

- Research Question: state your research question as a bullet. Your question should only be one sentence long.
- Ensure that your question fits the criteria discussed in the lecture and assigned readings.
- Your research question should follow logically from your literature review.
- Your research question should be qualitative in nature.
- Data Collection and Analysis
- In this section you will draw on what you learned in the readings and lectures to describe how you used a qualitative approach to collect and analyze your data.
- Do not include the data or results in this section — instead, focus on describing the process that you went through in your data collection and analysis.
- Succinctly and clearly describe the following:
- The name of the public figure or organization and social media platform from which you selected your data.
- A description of the type of text or images that you selected, and how this selection process was qualitative in nature.
- How you analyzed your data and why this approach is qualitative in nature.
- Results and Discussion
- Discuss the results of your analysis, i.e. use your own words and quoted material to discuss the themes or critical points that you discovered through your analysis of the social media content. It is important to use supported material or descriptions of visual content to support your assertions.
- Clearly link this discussion of your results to your research question and literature review.
- Discuss new insights generated by your results and how they enhance, contradict, or cause you to rethink the existing literature.
- Discuss any unexpected results that would lead you to revise your research question.
- Conclusion
- As briefly and succinctly as possible, summarize the most salient points from each of the above sections.
- References
- Each reference should appear in APA format.
- Appendix
- This appendix should be approximately 250 words in length. This word count includes quoted textual social media content or your own descriptions of visual content. The content or description of content included in this appendix should be the social media content that you selected and used in your analysis.
- You may include content that you did not quote from directly in the body of your paper, but which still informed your results.
- The content should be organized so that it is clear how it was posted. For example, if you have 50 tweets, you should quote each tweet separately in a column, including the times and dates of each post. Do not copy any images or screen shots, unless you are confident that doing so does not violate any terms of service (it probably does). You can, however, include your own descriptions of visual content if this visual content was used in your analysis.
