ASB 102: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
Kinship Charts Mini-Assignment
ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to get you thinking like an anthropologist, practicing informal interviewing and engaging specifically with the topic of kinship.
Skills and Knowledge:
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
- Create anthropological kinship charts
- Apply informal interviewing methods
- Examine patterns in kinship relations
- Challenge your assumptions about kinship and the process of gathering anthropological data
Task:
- First, you will create a kinship chart using yourself as ego. You will need to record at least two generations above you (i.e. through your grandparents) and, if applicable, at least one generation below you (i.e. your children and/or your siblings’ children). This chart must list all of ego’s parents’ siblings and all of ego’s cousins. Be sure to include all relations, including relations by birth (consaguines), relations by adoption, and relations by marriage (affines). Each person in the kinship chart should be identified by their name (at least first name) and the kinship term that you use to describe the relationship (e.g. if you have a half-sister but you only refer to her as your sister, write “sister”). You can choose to also list dates (birth, death, marriage) though this is not required. You should use the following symbols in your kinship chart. If there are relationships that are not covered below, you can invent a sign and indicate in your key how you are using it. You are required to provide a key, even for the symbols listed below. You can create the chart by hand as long as it is legible. Insert a copy of your chart in the assignment template.
- Next, choose another person to prepare a kinship chart for. This person cannot be related to you through birth, adoption, or marriage. You need to sit down with this person and work with them to create the chart. It is NOT appropriate to ask another person to create the chart themselves. One of the goals of this assignment is to have you practice informal interviewing so you need to explain to your research participant what you are doing, why, and ask them the relevant questions to be able to create their kinship chart. Just like the chart you prepared for yourself, you must record at least two generations above ego and, if applicable, at least one generation below ego. All of ego’s parents’ siblings and all of ego’s cousins must be listed as well as all relations by marriage, adoption, or birth. Everyone in the kinship chart needs to be identified by at least their first name as well as their relationship to ego (as identified by ego, not assigned by you). Refer to the set of symbols listed above and create symbols if a relationship is not shown in that set. A separate key must be associated with this chart (i.e. you cannot hand in just one key for both charts, even if you use the same symbols). Insert a copy of this chart into the assignment template.
(Note: To accommodate social distancing or quarantine, you can conduct this part of the activity over video chat, phone, or email. IF you use email or another alternative method of communicating that is not in-person, plan to ask your participant questions that will allow you to build their kinship chart just as you would if you were sitting down next to them. That is, do not ask remote participants to build their own charts!)
- Answer the questions in the template. Make sure to use sentence and paragraph form for your answers.
Criteria for Success:
In order to be successful in this assignment, do the following:
- Follow the directions for completing your kinship charts, making sure to properly and fully record at least three generations, using the appropriate symbols.
- Download and use the template to submit your kinship charts and to answer the assignment questions.
- Use proper spelling and grammar, including sentence and paragraph format.
- Check out the rubric to see how the assignment will be graded. Compare your completed assignment to the rubric to ensure you have met every expectation.
