Description/Paper Instructions
This course’s main assignment is a well-documented research article (1500-2000 words in length, approx. 6-8 pages double-spaced, 12-point font).
The material gathered from study or investigation should be used to back up a thesis statement.
The paper will be more than just a report that offers data; it will include a comprehensive examination and presentation of your own historical interpretation of the topic you’ve chosen, as well as your interpretation of the data you’ve acquired.
Problems and solutions may be discussed, as well as the definition of essential words and refutation of counter-arguments to your thesis statement.
It is critical that you select a topic that interests you.
Approach this work with a skeptical and open mind, then create an opinion based on what you learn.
While investigating, you must suspend your beliefs and allow the findings to shape your opinion. (This is a method for locating a thesis.)
Write the paper to support your thesis once you’ve found it.
In this process, you will employ some of the critical thinking abilities listed below:
Selecting an appropriate topic and restricting it.
Obtaining information and compiling a summary of sources.
Sources are analyzed and evaluated.
Identifying and defining essential terms.
Information is synthesized, and sources are compared and contrasted.
A thesis is put to the test, a historical argument is made, and rebuttal is used.
Obtaining support for a cause.
Keeping track of sources.
Because this may be a longer paper than you’ve written before and because a complex process is involved, it’s best if you follow these stages to finish it:
Choose a topic from the chapters covered in The American Yawp (Chapters 1-15) that you’d like to learn more about and are willing to devote some time to. Your chosen subject should be narrowly focused. Ask yourself a question that you truly want to know the answer to. You might wish to start with multiple topics in mind.
Perform some preliminary research on the subject (s). You can start with the textbook and then go on to other sources of information. Make your topic more specific. Write out a summary of your issue, your interest in it, the questions you want to answer, and a hypothesis you want to test.
Collect data from a variety of sources. For your paper, you must use at least four sources, one of which must be a primary source.
Primary sources come from the time period under examination.
Our textbook is an example of a secondary source, yet it also contains snippets from original sources that you might utilize in your article.
Outline the findings of your study as well as the structure of your report (you are not required to submit the outline).
Write the final text, making care to include a Works Cited List and referencing correctly in MLA format.
