Application Paper Description and Instructions:
Applying Organizational Behavior to Individuals and Workplaces This paper applies individual organizational behavior concepts to people, workplaces and their improvement. The focus is on individuals and the conditions, issues, challenges or problems they face in workplaces. You are to write about a specific individual, his or her workplace, and apply OB concepts to recommend improvements. The specific person is selected from Garson’s book, All the Livelong Day. In her book, All the Livelong Day, Barbara Garson has interviewed and written about people, their work, their relationships with one another, their group and organization, and how they cope with difficult and tedious aspects of their work and working environment. You are to identify the person you’ve selected, summarize his or her workplace, and on the basis of your description, provide an analysis and recommendation using OB concepts.
Person and workplace
- Select a work place settings – the Astoria, Oregon tuna processing factory, the Lordstown, Ohio automotive assembly plant, or the Kennel Club New York, New York office typing pool. Choose and focus on ONE person interviewed (in each workplace we respectively read about Starlein, Irma Utti, Nan Cappy, Cless, Mrs. Hikkula, Eleanor & Elsa Lammi, Loretta Haskell, Little Bugas, Jean Nordmark, Mary Hyrske, Stella, Jo-anne, Dick Fengs, Bert Green or Ted Bugas; Duane, Stan, Eddie, Indian Nut, Jane, or Tony; and Erna, Kay, Kathy, Dolores, Dahlia, Joyce, Lillian, Muriel, Lee-anne, Barbara or Franny). Write what you know about the person, his or her role, the group and organization, working conditions, satisfaction, and the group or organization’s goals, performance criteria and actual outcomes. You may add appropriate details in your case that you then use in your analysis.
Individual-level OB concepts and analysis
- Select three individual-level concepts from three different areas of the organizational behavior textbook (i.e. you will repeat these elements three times: sections i, ii, and iii in outline that follows; each of your concepts should be from a different topic area or textbook chapter). For each concept, a) define, providing your reference1 (from the textbook) and b) describe why that concept is appropriate and relevant to what you identify as an issue in the person and workplace. Be sure that your concept is based on specific theory and its elements, and not a broad area such as diversity, moods, personality, perception, or motivation [these areas are textbook chapters and specific concepts are one of the theories of motivation or personality theory types]. Based on the individual-level organizational behavior concept you selected, suggest c) changes would you propose and what improvements would you expect? Be reasonable in the costs of your proposed change relative to its benefits.
For example, we talked in about seasonal workers in the Tuna Fish chapter, and the efforts by management to use them and the opposition by the union. This undermined “organizational commitment,” influencing workers’ attitudes including diminishing people’s job satisfaction. You would have described the a person (i.e. Jo-anne), her work, issues of pay and hours, defined organizational commitment, and made suggestions to improve organizational commitment to thus better job satisfaction, productivity and benefit both the worker and factory.
- For citations, I prefer Chicago Manual of Style (see http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html) but will accept other styles as long as they are consistently and correctly used in your paper)
Conclusions and Recommendations
- Write a summary paragraph, integrating all three individual-level organizational behavior concepts from different areas/topic, to present your overall view on what matters in to that person in this workplace, and what to do to improve it in a way that benefits both individuals and the organization. Do not simply repeat your concepts, but integrate them into overall insights for your conclusion and recommendation.
1500-2500 words. 5pages, double space.. Please be sure to use subheadings in assignment outline in
your paper to clearly identify each concept, its application, and your suggested changes.
- Summary of workplace (~ 1 to 2 pages)
- Application of organization behavior concept
.i Area / Concept 1 (~ ½ to 1 page)
- Definition
- Description & application
- Suggested change, expected result, and implementation issues
.ii Area / Concept 2 (~ ½ to 1 page)
- Definition
- Description & application
- Suggested change, expected result, and implementation issues
.iii Area / Concept 3 (~ ½ to 1 page)
- Definition
- Description & application
- Suggested change, expected result, and implementation issues
III. Conclusions and Recommendations (~ ½ to 1 page)
The organizational behavior concepts that you are to consider are those at the individual level that we have studied in Essentials of Organizational Behavior by Robbins and Judge. You must correctly cite the definition of concepts you use (authors, imprint and page number using recognized citation style). Please note that this paper should be thoughtful and concise – it is more difficult to write a short paper that makes clear points than it is to write a long paper that rambles on. You will need to draft and then edit what you write, editing for clarity in the case description, and then sharpness in the explanation and application of concepts, consideration for improvements, and finally integration across the three suggestions for overall conclusions and recommendation.
