In each instance, one relies on underlying assumptions. In the first instance, the basic assumption is, It does not matter, and, if it did, it is not relevant to me. In the second instance, the assumption runs something like this: I am expected to be able to explain God and his actions to my own satisfaction. Finally, in the third instance, the underlying assumption may be worded thusly: I already know the answer; I am just looking for a way to prop it up. A human inclination is to accept the initial version of a story to be the tried and true one. It becomes the standard by which all other versions are judged. But if the initial version is flawed, defending it is likened to building a house on sand. The surest way to proceed is to keep an open mind, detect the assumptions on which a proposition is stated, weigh the evidence, draw tentative conclusions, and test the outcome. For this assignment, identify some doctrine or practice that is currently in vogue. Ideally, you may select an interpretation or practice that you doubt will stand in light of the New Testament. But whether it does or does not stand in that light, determine the assumptions that underlie it. For example, what assumption underlies the idea that the miracles of Jesus were not real? That women should be allowed to preach? That when Christ returns, he will establish a 1,000-year reign on earth? In the first example, the assumption may be that in a scientific age, we should be able to explain everything in physical terms. Since miracles do not fit the scientific method, then Jesus did not perform true miracles. In the second example, one may be inclined to say that Paul was mistaken or that he spoke in a time when society itself was not ready for female leaders. And in the last example, the assumption may be that the 1,000 years in Revelation 20 represent a literal time period on earth and that the people included in the reign were all the saints.
