Assignment: Auto-Ethnography and Life Chart
Auto-ethnography and life chart due on.
350 – 500 words double spaced APA format.
Total Points Possible: 30 points
- Purpose and Relevance of this Assignment. This is a reflexive autobiographical assignment based on Chapter 10 Experiencing, Vivanco’s Book and G.G. Núñez’s In Search of the Next Harvest IN Homelands: Women’s Journeys Across Race, Place, and Time, and Ramirez’ Life Charts (Ch 4 in Against Machismo). Write 350 – 500 words double spaced APA format autoethnographic narrative written in the first person. Students are to select a key social issue or topic of personal interest, identify one theoretical perspective to address this issue, provide a one-page literature review of how this topic is addressed in anthropology/sociology, and tie your personal experience to this topic. Life Charts should have at least three lines of reflection, academics, family, labor history, and significant others in your life. A reflection describing your life chart and analyzing key themes and patterns in your life chart should accompany your work.
The purpose of this assignment is for students to reflect on their own life in an autobiographic and social scientific/ethnographic perspective by writing an auto-ethnography. In seeking to learn and understand from the lives of others, it is equally important to reflect on who you are as individuals and as social scientists. Talking about oneself has not always been the norm in Anthropology. This process of “reflexivity” was heavily influenced by the Post-Modern Movement’s impact on the field of Anthropology in the 1980’s. As social scientists involved in participant observation research, anthropologists are now being held accountable to disclose who you are and where you are coming from, and how you have come to learn about the world you live in. Consider this assignment also as a space and an opportunity for deep reflection and analysis on the issues and themes that move us to study the topics that interest you as researchers.
The goal of this assignment is to identify, discuss, and analyze one key historical juncture or event in your life that have heavily influenced and crafted who you are today. In thinking about what to write, think about experiences that usually trigger a strong emotional response for you (a childhood experience, a major life event, a significant rite of passage, etc.). As every person in our class is different, these significant life moments and experiences will vary. In the past, students have written about leaving to the military, migrating to the U.S. with their families, transitioning from English as Second Language classes to English Only classes, losing a child, and other momentous events. As you describe and discuss this significant life event, also provide a discussion of what this event speaks to on a greater social level. For example, if you remember the day a parent left your family while you were still a young child, discuss how this event contributed to the feminization of poverty, as your single parent household struggled to make ends meet. Another example could be, a student discussing going off to the military, and being transformed into a man, while also discussing the politics of war.
The relevance of this assignment is to this course on ethnographic methods is to turn the ethnographic lens on the ethnographer/ participant observer. I argue that who we are will have a lot to do with what we privilege in our fieldwork and in our social scientific endeavors. A professor of mine also argued that unless we are bold enough to dig deep and identify our most serious and painful issues, these same issues will continue to haunt us in the field. Note that the issues we discuss need not be full of pain or anguish, some of our most memorable events are filled with joy and anticipation for what is to come (moving to a new city, getting your first job, having your first child, etc.) In the past, this particular assignment has served as a watershed experience for students in this class. It has opened some painful moments in history, but it has also been a big step towards healing that which ails us. This assignment has also allowed my students to connect with one another and with me on a quite profound level. I look forward to encountering your journeys.
