Should probably be written my someone familiar with lab blood bank such as Medical lab tech In this course you are required to develop a case study relating to a Immunohematology Topic. Many of you are currently working in a laboratory and have access to patient specimens, which is a great start to developing a case study. You can develop a case study from a real patient in the hospital (personal information excluded of course) or create a case study based on a fictional character. A rubric has been provided that will be used for grading this project so you have a clear indication of what’s expected. This project should be in depth and accounts for half of your course grade (this is NOT a weekend assignment). Here are a couple of rules to follow when creating a case study: Do not write the case study as if it were a story. Medical case studies do not contain narratives or private/personal information.
Don’t list where the patient was born, their favorite thing to eat, or anything suggestive of their personality. Don’t talk about the patient as if you know them personally. Do not refer to the patient by their first name or by using “she/he” or “him/her” in the case study. That makes the case study feel more like a story, which is not the point. This is a professional case study, so refer to the person as “the patient”, Mr./Ms./Mrs. (Last name), or Baby Boy/Girl (Last name). Use PAST tense when you’re writing. These cases are not occurring at present time, so please be aware of how you are referring to events. If the case occurred on August 10, 2016, don’t write the case as if it was happening today.
Example: “The patient was admitted to the hospital complaining of a headache, fever, chills…” Case Study Format 600-750 words Calibri or Times New Roman Font 12-point font 1×1” margins This project will be graded based on several categories listed below. Make sure you address each of these categories in your project: Patient Medical History For the medical history section, you must include important patient information in your case study. Create a story behind your patient that fits with the disease/disorder. Include: name, date of birth, location, hospital info, travel/family medical history (if applicable), clinical symptoms, initial vitals, how long the patient has been feeling this way, previous hospital visits, etc.
If you are basing the project off of a real patient at your internship site, DO NOT include any real patient identifiers. You must change all personal information to a fictitious character (name, DOB, patient ID #, hospital info, etc.). If you use any real patient information in your case study, you will receive a ZERO for the entire assignment and have a meeting with the program director for violating HIPPA laws! This could lead to dismissal from the program.
It is that serious of an offense. Laboratory Testing, Results & Diagnosis Based on the doctor’s findings and clinical presentation of the patient, list the laboratory testing that would be ordered (with an emphasis on BLOOD BANK testing). Provide all laboratory results (with reference ranges and units of measure) and the diagnosis based on these results. You MUST include pictures within the case study. The images need to be clear and appropriate for the specific case study and your clinical site can be a great resource for this requirement. Acceptable images include: patient samples (in an unlabeled specimen container), images from patient smears, etc.
Conclusion Provide an ending to the case study. What happened to your patient? Did the patient recover from treatment, pass away, stay hospitalized for several weeks then discharged? Remember – Unfortunately, case studies do not always have happy endings. Be realistic. Study Questions/Answers You must include 3 short response questions specific to your case study. You must also include the answer to the questions for credit.
