In this activity you will complete a hands-on experiment to determine how temperatures
of water change
Pre- Lab Demonstrations:
1. Watch the demonstration lab by at the front of the room. As the spoon is heated by
the candle what happens to the butter at on the spoon? What would happen with a
wood spoon? Write your observation.
2. Desk Lamp – Go up to the lamp set up in the middle of the room. Put your hand 3-4
inches away from the bulb. What do you observe? Write your observation below.
3. Handle an ice cube. What do you observe? Write your observation below.
Watch the videos of the Storm over Miami and the Lava Lamp. Write your observations.

4. What is conduction, convection, and radiation?
Before you begin your lab, review the procedures. Then write a hypothesis that reflects
what you think will happen to the water temperature. Record your hypothesis as an “if,
· Hot water, Cold water, Foam cups, Thermometer, Measuring cups
1. Gather materials.
2. Measure 100 ml of hot water and 100 ml of cold water into separate foam cups.
3. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of hot water and the cold
water. Record your prediction for the final temperature of mixed water.
4. Pour the hot and cold water into a third foam cup.
5. Allow some time for the thermometer to reach a final temperature, then measure the
temperature of the water. Record the temperature in the data table.
6. Repeat for a total of two trials.
