- Experience how the research process can shape and answer questions For your final project, choose one primary text from our course and research the protest/resistance represented. You should be able to identify a moment in time (Ferguson 2014, Alcatraz 1969, CA farm labor strikes of the 30s, etc) to center your inquiry. From here, form a set of research questions to shape your search (What was the popular opinion of this protest? How was this protest represented in contemporary media?
What actions or response did this protest compel? Etc). Your research will seek to understand how the conversation around this event was represented in its contemporary time, how this conversation is informed by a historical framework, the relationship between these ideas and art (literature), and the continued significance of this protest/resistance today. In essence, you are moving outward from the literature to think critically about this moment in American culture.
Requirements: Students will gain familiarity with various tools and locations for research in American Studies. You will use • 1–2 poems o Need not be standalone, but can be • 2–3 newspaper or magazine items (not advertisements) o 2+ items need to be written by women • 2–3 handwritten items (digitized) • 2–3 items of printed ephemera o Might include: song sheets, death notices, advertisements, etc. • 1+ first person account of life during the time period of your chosen protest • 1–2 reviews of scholarly books
o The books should relate to your research topic. • 1–2 scholarly articles o should address research topic. • 1 scholarly monograph What will you turn in? You will build a multimodal final product that presents photos, screenshots, or pdfs of your research items alongside brief, explanatory text (similar to museum wall text). Write-ups need to include a description of each item including the category it fulfills, a proper MLA citation for each item, details about the process of finding each item, and connections between your items and your research topic.
You do not need to find items in the order they are listed. Every piece should have something to offer to your understanding of the cultural climate that produced this protest/resistance, but they may not reference the event specifically.
