Mark and Jacqueline have a family member with Alzheimer’s disease.
For the past 30 years, Mark and Jacqueline have been married. They have adult children who live in a different state than they do. Because Jacqueline’s mother has Alzheimer’s disease, she has moved in with the couple. Jacqueline is an only child who has always promised to look after her mother in her old age. When Jacqueline is in the room, her mother is completely unaware of her surroundings and frequently shouts out for her daughter Jackie. Jacqueline reassures her mother that she is available to assist her, but it is in vain. Because she must cater to her mother’s everyday needs, Jacqueline is unable to visit her children during the holidays. Because of her mother’s care needs or because she is too exhausted, she is hesitant to visit friends or even go to the movies. Jacqueline goes to bed at night with many of her caregiving responsibilities unfulfilled, despite the fact that she has eliminated most leisure activities with Mark. She tries to visit with her mother during the day, but she is barred from doing so by her mother. Mark finds it difficult to plan for the impending holidays due to his wife’s inability to focus on anything other than her mother’s care. Jacqueline has trouble sleeping at night and is unable to prepare ahead of time, even if it is only a few days. Because of her mother’s unpredictable behavior and her need to attend to daily care, she is unable to see friends and is hesitant to have friends visit.
Questions to Ponder
1. How do you think Jacqueline’s sense of role performance is reflected in this situation?
2. What do you think Jacqueline is doing to help her own health?
