Many writers have tried to establish the relationship between the former Trump campaign advisor and volunteer, Carter Page with the CIA following his alleged role in Trump’s 2016 campaign. Some of the relationships that the writers discuss include that Carter was a CIA informant, contact person, and asset. The first relationship between Page and the CIA is that he was an informant for five years between 2008 and 2013. According to Scarborough (2019). CIA informed the FBI about Carter’s educational and professional work, his role in President Trump’s campaign as an advisor and his previous relationship with the CIA as an informant. Scarborough also describes Page as CIA asset. According to Barrett (2019), Page also confessed that he had spoken to the CIA in the past. Another relationship between Page and the CIA that is documented is that Carter was a CIA personal contact person. According to Ross (2019), the FBI did not inform the court that Carter worked for the CIA as a contact person. The writer reveals that since Carter was an employer at the agency, he was in a position to give Trump inside information which the writer describes as positive assessment. Ross further explains that the FBI omitted important information retrieved from another government agency and provided the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) with inaccurate information regarding Carter’s previous relationships with the CIA. Ross’s argument is also supported by Ignatius who argues that the FBI abused its power when pressing Page for the FISA warrant by overlooking CIA message that Page occasionally worked for the agency as an operational contact. He adds that the FBI acted as such to avoid inconsistencies in the latest FISA renewal because the bureau overlooked the relationship between Page and CIA in its initial reports. In conclusion, Carter indeed had a relationship with the CIA. Although none of the writers gives the exact relationship between the two, being an informant, contact person or an asset and his confession are enough to deduce a relationship.
