Public health professionals have the opportunity to serve as advocates for health issues, communities, and their professions. Opportunities for advocacy often occur through brief encounters. These encounters can be planned or unexpected, or with individuals who require messages to be brief and specific. To prepare for these occasions, professionals often prepare an and “elevator speech.” These persuasive and informative communications are no more than 30 seconds to 1 minute in length.
For this assignment, imagine you are a public health advocate who has an opportunity to speak with an elected official about a health issue of interest to you. Develop a script for your speech on the topic you selected. For the presentation of your speech, Submit your script with and an additional page for references.
Complete the following:
Part 1: Develop the Script
Prepare a script:
Outline key information about the specific health issue of interest to you (e.g., burden of disease, population most affected).
Explain why it is important to address the health issue.
Advocate for a public health intervention for your topic. Be sure to present a specific “ask” from the public official (e.g., increased funding, vote for a bill).
Part 2: Present the Speech (I will be doing that)
record yourself giving your elevator speech. Imagine that your instructor is the legislator with whom you are speaking. Use the following guidelines:
