With its big vision to test for a variety of conditions using a small sample of blood, the blood-testing startup had racked up a $9 billion valuation, and its CEO Elizabeth Holmes was featured on the covers of business magazines and lists of top executives. However, questions about how the company’s technology worked began to surface.” – According to Business Insider.Watch and read about how this ‘bright young thing,’ a Stanford dropout and Steve Jobs admirer, was able to establish a start-up company, enlisting the help of a slew of powerful investors and board members, and then it all fell apart. All kinds of powerful men agreed to invest in the company or serve on the board of directors, as discussed in the CNN article and briefly mentioned in Erika Cheung’s Ted Talk. Even after the suspicion had arisen, some of them defended Holmes vehemently for a long time. Consider what made them so devoted. Why are we (people in general) so drawn to con artists?
The Ted Talk by Erika Cheung and the WSJ article on another whistleblower, Tyler Shultz, give us a glimpse into the mind of a whistleblower. Their experiences demonstrate that job security and the fear of retaliation from the company aren’t the only factors that deter potential whistleblowers. Discuss what factors (which I did not discuss here) can influence individuals’ decision to become a whistleblower based on what you read and watch. Other factors that were not discussed in the video/article can also be considered.
The ‘Dice Experiment’ video is a snippet from the HBO documentary ‘The Inventor,’ which you saw the trailer for. While the psychology described by Dan Ariely, a well-known behavioral economist, cannot fully explain Holmes’ actions, the experiment’s outcome is fascinating. Do you have any other examples of people who did wrongdoings for the same reasons Ariely discusses in the video?
