FINAL EXAM DIRECTIONS
Your exam must be turned before midnight on the due date. Late exams will not be accepted after midnight of the extended late period—no excuses. The final exam MUST be turned in through the SafeAssign tool provided here in your Blackboard course platform. Emailed exams will serve only as proof that your exam was completed by the deadline, after which you must resolve the malfunction that delayed submission. In the case of a technical malfunction or error, you must be diligent and make sure this issue is resolved and you are able to submit your exam through the SafeAssign tool. If you miss the extended late period, there will be no opportunities to make up the final exam.
Exam Format I prefer that you submit your exam in a word document formatted in Microsoft Word or a simple format, such as rich text that is compatible with most composition software. This is for your own benefit to make sure your document is compatible with SafeAssign. SafeAssign accepts files in .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, and .pdf, only. Files of any other format will not be checked through SafeAssign. You should have a heading and title on your exam (see Sample Heading below), and you should put your last name and page number at the top right corner of each page.
Use black 12 point Times New Roman font. You should also have a one-inch margin on all sides. Either single or double-space between lines is acceptable.
You do not have to re-write each passage that you respond to, but you should clearly number the passages that you choose.
Short-essay Responses Each response should be as complete as possible, meaning short-essay. This course emphasizes composition, which means “writing.” You should refer to the literary pieces to support your answers with a balance of quotes and/or paraphrased details. You do not need to have a works cited page or indicate the page location of your quotes, but you should put direct quotes in quotation marks in a clear context of the literature and credit your sources. Be sure to credit your sources in an informal MLA format (as you might in a classroom exam), but do not limit your answer to a cited reference. Remember, this is your opportunity to show what you know and how well you can express what you have learned, so put some time and effort into all the questions.
In general, an answer that shows a loose knowledge of the work and an elementary understanding of what the passage and the work are about but with little detail and no engagement with the issues of the passage will get a “C” of some sort. Answers showing good detail and posing a solid general thesis in response to the specific passage will get a “B.” “A” will be reserved for answers that make a sophisticated case using precise detail from the work, beyond the literal text. Remember, this is your opportunity to show what you know and how well you can express what you have learned, so put some time and effort into all the questions. The expectations for your answers are higher than those for study questions, so some answers may not score as high in the exam as they might in the study questions.
It is not to your advantage to answer more questions than requested in the directions; for example, if you answer four questions when only three are requested, your first three responses will be the ones scored unless there is some indication that a particular response should not be graded. This indication must be clear as I will not debate the issue and will grade only what are clearly your intended responses.

Address the following points in this mandatory exam question:
- Discuss the challenged convention and the consequences of imposed expectations on “the other.”

Choose either Group 1 or Group 2 as your focal topic:

- Group 2: “Lusus Naturae,” “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” and Candide challenge the conventions of communityand the expectations each of us must fulfill in order to be an accepted family member or citizen.
Magical Realism challenges convention in a fantastic form analogous to what we often categorize as Fairy Tale. Magical Realism challenges the convention of the fairy tale lesson by defying a contrived lesson, or any “happily ever after.” Instead, the stories challenge, or deconstruct, the convention of our expectations of others, or “the other,” in a metaphorical state with multiple interpretations. - Speech and conversation are important in the play, and many of the characters have distinctive ways of speaking. How do the characters’ speech patterns differ?

- A central theme in the play is trickery or deceit, whether for good or evil purposes. Counterfeiting, or concealing one’s true feelings, is part of this theme. Good characters as well as evil ones engage in deceit as they attempt to conceal their feelings: Beatrice and Benedick mask their feelings for one another with bitter insults, Don John spies on Claudio and Hero. Who hides and what is hidden? How does deceit function in the world of the play, and how does it help the play comment on theater in general?
- In this play, accusations of unchaste and untrustworthy behavior can be just as damaging to a woman’s honor as such behavior itself. Is the same true for the males in the play? How is a man’s honor affected by accusations of untrustworthiness or unfaithfulness? Do sexual fidelity and innocence fit into the picture in the same way for men as it does for women? Examine the question of honor and fidelity as it relates to four male characters in the play: Benedick, Leonato, Claudio, and Don Pedro.
