#2 The revolution marked a shift in the moral and social attributes of governance. The monarchial view of human nature was that subjects were inadequate, they had their shortcomings, were reliant, and they lacked any form of willpower. The monarchs held that people were innately unethical, and they believed that their lordship over their subjects established a sense of order. On the other hand, the republican school of thought dispelled the prejudicial view of human nature held by the monarchs. It recognized the critical role of common folk in the organization and execution of the government. While the sovereigns viewed human nature as unethical and corruptible, republicanism asserted the role of citizens and it required utmost altruism. With republicanism, human nature was viewed as beneficent, willingly giving up personal needs and property for the betterment of others. They viewed human nature as responsible and patriotic, and they could be trusted with property, particularly land to augment their independence from the state.
#9 The American leaders had a disdain for monarchism and all the negative connotations that was linked to it. They believed that the total elimination of monarchs would herald a new era of peaceful coexistence among various nations. Republicans believed that monarchs had selfish ambitions for which they engaged in secret alliances and harmful power struggles. The sovereigns established standing armies to further their causes, a fact that was believed to be the root of a number of conflicts around the world. Republicanism believed that individual nations that were run by selfless individuals would engage in peaceful relations. These countries would participate in unhindered trade. Republicanism had faith in free commerce as the glue that would hold the world together and eliminate all conflict.
