Description/Paper Instructions
Introduction to Literature; An Independent Response Paper
This paper will be an independent response to “The Payoff” by Susan Perabo. Choose the fictional element of the story you thought was most important to understand the story’s meaning (plot, characterization, point of view, theme, setting, style and symbol, etc.) and trace its development throughout the story. The elements of fiction are covered in your text and significant questions are also provided on the handouts distributed in class. Perhaps you feel that the characterization is the key to understanding the story? Or point of view? Or setting? How so?
Because this is an “independent” response, you should focus on the story and you own ideas exclusively. Do not consult secondary sources. You are providing a close reading of the work, guiding the reader through your interpretation of the story. The purpose of the assignment is to record the reasons why you have come to a certain conclusion about “The Payoff.” A good response paper concentrates on details. You should quote portions of the story to show how the text supports your thesis. Find those passages in the story that created meaning or significance for you and analyze them. Although some limited plot summary may be necessary, avoid excessive summary. Analysis is the key.
