Comment: The history of human-cat interactions is fascinating, but probably not the kind of question you’d ask for ethnography. From our conversation in my office, I remember you’re just curious about the strong attachments humans have to their cats (and likely vice versa, though that would be harder to study through ethnography) — so strong that some students you know from China go to great lengths to bring their cats with them. As methods, certainly, observing cat-human interactions will be key (but not just a weekend! It’s a semester-long project) — but also interviewing cat owners, and perhaps going to the human society and asking the people there about the cats in the shelter, and how they fare without a close human owner (just thinking about this) — also, perhaps, you could talk to an anthropology professor who studies human-animal interactions). Perhaps someone at the vet school? Just some ideas….
I will be researching people that own cats to understand their relationship with them and to demystify some of the beliefs I have heard on cats. Despite my engagements with cats because I own two of them, I have an interest in finding out about the relationship between people and pets. I think cats are independent, love their comfort, but still needs related to people. There are some of my friend’s family think cats are evil and all of them have parasites, and lots of people that I know also have similar ideas. Such thoughts ignite my thoughts toward a need to think about the relationship from other perspectives. I seek to comprehend the behavior of cats in the family setting and how people interact with them. My curiosity will serve as an enabler towards more positive research and feedback since I will formulate more fair, unbiased, and opinionated analysis (Moreton and Walter 3). Therefore, my positionality will act as a guideline for me to develop the right research questions and also become more observant about the cat-people relationship. For a person to be a cat lover, they must know how to handle the most difficult people. I know such as many people disregard cats as pets because they cannot get to control them. Therefore, the people that can achieve that must have high emotional intelligence. Stating my interest during the research will only get me closed to the answers I would be seeking, and since people love sharing their stories, I would be allowed to some specific spaces that foster my research (Harding 173: Tallbear 2). I believe I will be able to learn openly from the groups of people with little to no limitations. According to this, write a formal proposal following the file I have uploaded. |
