PART I:
Like most other colleges, MCC no longer mails students a print Report Card at the end of the semester.
+ Do you know where to locate your REPORT CARD that contains “OFFICIAL GRADES” for this class, as well as your GPA? Briefly explain where or how to access your Report Card.
+ Do you know where to locate your student records info in WebAdvisor? Briefly explain where or how to access WebAdvisor.
PART II::
Look back at the first day’s reading (Syllabus and INTRODUCTION START HERE Module) in Week 1 about Time Management and the number of hours MCC expects students to dedicate to homework.
- Use this CALCULATOR in the section labeled InfoGuideto find the expected weekly time investment for one course, and after calculating the amount of time required, did this equal the number of hours you needed to complete the work?
- Do you now believe instructors when they caution you that some classes, especially writing classes, require a LOT of your time and will feel challenging and that you will have to find at LEAST 15 to 20 hours of time PER WEEK to do homework in ADDITION to the time spent online in class, and were you somewhat amazed that this turned out to be true? (Note that the 15 – 20 hours per week for homework is part of the basic formula for managing time and figuring out time commitments for undergraduate level college course homework.) Recall the reminder about Time Management on the Syllabus as well as the very first day of class cautionary advice.
- Are you better prepared now and know what to expect in upper level undergraduate courses when it comes to time management and understanding that academic work takes more time than everyday writing/texting/emailing or high school writing?
PART III:
On page 115 of Strategies for Successful Writing, there are seven sample sentences regarding nonparallel, parallel, or balanced syntax next to the box containing the word EXERCISE.
Rewrite each nonparallel sentence to make it parallel, and explain WHAT changes needed to occur.
PART IV:
On pages 116 – 17 of Strategies for Successful Writing, there are seven sample sentences regarding passive or active voice next to the box containing the word EXERCISE.
Rewrite all the passive sentences as active ones, and explain WHAT changes needed to occur.
Part V:
On page 117 of Strategies for Successful Writing, there are two sample paraphraseunder the section labeled BEYOND THE SINGLE SENTENCE next to the box containing the word EXERCISE.
Revise both of the paragraphs to improve their style, and explain WHAT changes needed to occur.
Remember, revision should sometimes be significant and includes editing, deleting unnecessary repetition, combining sentences/ideas to eliminate repetition, and just outright overhauling. Sentence variety is also something to be sure to work on, especially for sentences that all begin with the same basic syntax (i.e., “she began, she went, she picked, she put,” etc.).
The second paragraph about Susie’s seashells is especially problematic and needs significant reworking, tightening of ideas, and addition of new details to give the paragraph some interest.
I’ve retyped the paragraphs here so that you can copy/paste them to revise:
Paragraph #1:
Andrew Carnegie came to America from Scotland. He worked as a factory hand, a telegrapher, and a railway clerk to support himself. His savings from these jobs were invested in oil and later in the largest steel works in the country. Historians do not agree in their assessments of Carnegie. Some have considered him a cruel taskmaster and others a benevolent benefactor. His contributions to American society, however, cannot be denied. He established public libraries all across the country and spent much time in promoting peace. Good or bad, he ranks as one of our most noteworthy nineteenth-century immigrants.
NOTE: We in Macomb County have a Carnegie Library: it is located in downtown Mt. Clemens, and the building is now the site of the Anton Art Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., which houses art work by local and national artists as well as holds an annual street art fair each year and a several weeks’ long Christmas art market.
Paragraph #2:
She went to the seashore. She found some seashells. She picked up the seashells. She put the seashells into a basket. She had a whole basketful of seashells. She went home with the basket. She took the shells out of the basket. She put the shells on a dinette table. She brought jeweler’s tools to the table. She pierced holes in the shells. She strung the shells on small chains. The chains were gold and silver. She made twenty necklaces. The selling price of the necklaces was $10 a piece. She earned $175 profit. She used her profits to go to the shore again. She could afford to stay for a week this time.
Be sure to LABEL each part of your answer (Part I, Part II, Part III, etc.) so when we read your post, we can easily figure out where each part is located.
