The sociology of mental health investigates how we approach diagnosing and treating mental diseases as extensions of culture and social structure. Sociologists account for these social variables in determining the existence of mental diseases, in addition to medically based neurological explanations for our emotional experiences. In the following task, you will be asked to analyze mental health in society from a sociological perspective.
Instructions: Write an 8-10 page paper (not counting the title and reference pages) that tackles the following four areas: Using our reading material for the week as a guide, define the sociological perspective on mental health in society in your own words.
Cite at least three separate journal papers that are no more than five years old and demonstrate the difference between a social and a strictly clinical perspective on mental health based on your own independent research.
Please describe the rise and significance of the United States’ pharmaceutical business in your critique of the clinical position on mental health. Has this industry, for example, influenced the prevalence of mental health diagnoses and treatment? Has it influenced our perceptions of whether or not our emotional suffering requires psychiatric treatment?
Please give at least three examples of how the “feeling rules” for men and women differ. Explain how variances in these feeling guidelines can lead to one gender receiving a mental disorder diagnosis while the other does not. Make careful to mention your sources to back up your claims. More than five years should have passed since the sources were used.
Assess whether the increased use of psychiatric drugs is good, neutral, or harmful to society. Please consider this assessment from a social standpoint. To back up your claim, make sure to include at least one source that is no more than five years old.
