EM4030 Purchasing Strategy, Management and Process
Assessed coursework: briefing for individual case study[1]
Your task:
To prepare one case study on purchasing strategy, management and process based on recent news articles from reputable sources (e.g. mainstream newspaper or professional publication such as Supply Management).
The case study will summarise the news story and explain how the story relates to relevant aspects of purchasing strategy, management and process theory/concepts, principles and techniques.
The case studies will serve as a learning resource for all group members.
Purpose:
The purpose of the case studies is to support students’ learning by providing critical reviews of PSMP concepts/theories/models etc covered in this module illustrated through real examples..
Notes and instructions:
This is individual coursework, which will be marked on the basis of the written account which you should prepare on your own.
I would encourage you however to coordinate with others in your selection of articles – the better the mix, the better the learning resource you will jointly create.
To allow you to co-ordinate your choices of articles, I have set up a discussion board in Blackboard. When you have chosen your article:Go to the discussion board and check whether your article has already been chosen
If yes, choose another
If no, post the full reference
There must be no duplication of news stories. Allocation on a first come, first served basis..
Each case should relate to a real and recent (2008/09/10/11) example, published in the high quality, mainstream media or relevant practitioner journals, to illustrate one or more of the major themes in this module.
There must be a clear link to strategy. You might for example, discuss sustainable procurement, or improving innovation though suppliers, or cost reduction through overseas sourcing. You would also draw links to foundation concepts such as market dynamics.
Each case may relate to an organization, an issue that affects several companies, an event (e.g. a change project), a business sector, etc. Public sector examples are acceptable. Try not to just focus on the big, household name multi-national firms.
You may refer to more than one source in your case write-up, but please make sure there is one central article to which all students and the tutor have access. Provide a weblink to the article. The article must be easily accessible for all students via a reputable website (i.e. no complex registration process, no fees needed, won’t lead to lots of spam email, etc).
Your case MUST be presented in the format indicated in the template provided. Do not change the formatting of the text of titles and subtitles, especially the heading numbering and styles. Using the template will allow me to easily compile the cases into a single document which I will post to Blackboard for all to access.
CASE CONTENT
For each case, you should provide:case study title – choose a title which indicates company/relationship/network and the purchasing theme(s)
your name
News story overview – a paragraph or two to describe the news story
Analysis – in 1000-1500 words (excluding references but including words within tables or figures that you compile), comment on the case, for example:
explain what this case demonstrates/illustrates
why is it a good example? You may contrast it with other examples, real or hypothetical.
What can you learn from it?
link – provide weblink(s) to the articles
reference(s) – provide the full reference(s) to the article(s) on which you are basing your case study
other references (e.g. to textbooks or articles for theory, model, etc) Remember to provide full reference including page numbers.
key words (optional) if their useful elements in your case which are not reflected in the title, you can add key words
