ANSWER TO THE QUESTION
First: Quotes from “How food and water are driving 21st Century African land grab.”
“The bio-fuel land grab in Africa is already displacing farmers and food production. The number of people going hungry will increase.”
“In many areas, the deals have led to evictions, civil unrest, and complaints of ‘land grabbing.’”
“Food shortages and riots in 28 countries in 2008, declining water supplies, climate change and huge population growth have together made land attractive.”
Reflection on Quotes
After reading the article, it dawned on me that the demand for land has been rapidly increasing in the recent years throughout the world. Africa, in particular, has been targeted by foreign countries and a new phenomenon is taking shape across the continent, threatening to intensify resource-related conflicts. Land grabbing, land selling, or land leasing affects Africa more than any other region. In Africa, land is an important natural resource and an imperative factor of production. Moreover, land is also essential for the affluence of an individual, their families, and their communities. Land is also vital for the state’s stability. Notably, millions of hectares in Africa have been reported to be under negotiation for sale or lease to rich countries in the last few years. In countries like Mali, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Kenya, and Sudan, the on-going land grab business has the potential for triggering or intensifying conflict.
Rich countries have found it wise to export their industrial demands and food insecurity to developing countries. The rich countries’ appetite to own a piece of land in developing counties like Ethiopia has been on a significant rise, turning into an ugly competition. The issue of land grabbing is typically veiled as a drive to improve the African economies and revolutionize agriculture. However, it seizes the natives’ land and water resources which are the fundamental natural resources that offer them sustenance. The colossal allocation of natural resources and wealth to foreign investors ravishes the inhabitants’ cultural integrity, water and food stockpiles.
Two Questions
Second: Quotes from “The Myth of the Ethical Shopper”
“Nearly every major apparel brand was, at one point or another, the target of a boycott campaign.”
“Our clothes are being made in ways that advocacy campaigns can’t affect and in places, they can’t reach.”
“As more and more of the world’s economy takes place without us, we need to change the way we think about going after sweatshops.”
After reading the article, I agree with Hobbes that the whole idea of boycotting sweatshop clothing does not necessarily make consumers wiser or the factory workers in developing countries any better. As Americans campaign against the labor of most of the companies whose manufacturing happens overseas, they fail to realize that they these companies have little control over their production. The real problem of unethical labor, child labor, and forced work lies in the effectiveness of the institutions in the countries where manufacturing is done. Boycotting sweatshop clothing comes across as merely treating the symptoms and not the cause. As such, countries where production takes place should create and enforce regulations and laws around the factories to ensure human rights are protected.
