Hello, you have to do TWO activities. For the first activity you have to compare my own example/discussion with one of my group members. I am going to send you both my own example/discussion and the one of my group members. The amount of words for this activity are 150. Also I am going to send you the reading to a better understanding. The source I am asking for has to be from the reading (just one source for this activity) I am going to send you. If you have any questions let me know, thank you.
My own example/discussion:
The majority of developed countries of the world have already made a lot of laws protecting human beings’ equities. However, any country could not create the legislative system eliminated gender inequality. Women first and foremost suffer from it. Their rights are not enough protected and the need of recognizing them as human rights are ignored even nowadays.Women began to fight for their empowerment long ago. Charlotte Bunch, a women’s rights advocate, states in her article that female representatives’ equities are limited and unprotected. According to Bunch (1990), women’s rights are secondary and not significant compared to human rights. Nowadays, women remain less protected by law and as a result, suffer from physical and sexual abuse.
American women are not an exception. Though the USA is known as a democratic country, twenty-two percent of women say that they were sexually abused at work (Gramlich, 2017). The society is also guilty because, for example, there are not any laws concerning punishments for domestic violence against women. Female representatives understand that governmental inaction makes them feel unprotected before society, but they cannot do anything.
To summarize, inadequate gender legislation and discrimination of women’s rights and freedoms create impunity and gender inequality. Even such a developed and powerful country like the United States of America cannot cope with this problem. The state and its laws have to preserve the liberties of its citizens, including female representatives. It can only be possible if women’s rights will be equated with human rights.
Example/discussion of one of my group member:
At the beginning of the reading Charlotte Bunch states, “However many violations of women’s human rights are distinctly connected to being female – that is, women are discriminated against and abused on the basis of gender.” Meaning based upon gender whether female or male society will treat you different. Since female gender is seen as the inferior gender our rights have also fallen inferior in society. So if we are denied rights we have no say what we can and can’t do with our own lives/bodies. “When combined with race, class, and other forms of oppression, it constitutes a deadly denial of women’s right to life and liberty on a larger scale throughout the world.” (Bunch, 1990, p. 489) Most men today all around the world are gifted with impunity for simply being male while women can even decide their own reproductive rights, freedom of sexuality, etc. Still to this day women in USA have to fight for the right over their control of their own decision when it comes to abortion. In work places men usually get picked over women to oversee a certain job/project and get paid significantly more. While women might do the same job their income will still not be higher than a mans. Even though there is no physical abuse when it comes to these types of unfair rights it is still gender violence because our potential as women are purposely being held back.Second activity: For this activity based on the assignment I am going to send you, you have to create a post that discusses an additional topic/reading pertinent to the Module. Also I am going to send you the reading, is the same reading as the activity 1, both activities have the same reading. This activity has two sources one from the reading and the other from the news article you choose. The amount of words for this activity are 150. Do not worry about the video, just focus on the reading. If you have any questions let me know, thank you.
Assignment: Women’s rights advocates like Charlotte Bunch criticized the human rights project in the 1990s for not recognizing women’s rights as human rights. To what extent is this critique still relevant today if you reflect on the assigned readings and the documentary “Half the Sky”? Share examples of impunity in your own community/ country that you read about in the news, and discuss factors that may contribute to a culture of impunity for gender violence.
