Instructions: The point is to: a) have you do more looking into something from the syllabus or from a reading that intrigues you and find good resources about that topic or issue; b) have you analyze the major arguments and underlying assumptions that authors mobilize in order to develop their points; c) have you bring various kinds of arguments and points into conversation with each other, using class readings to help you do so. Some further points or questions to consider in your reading and analysis: What is the question about “whiteness” the authors are exploring? What kind of approach do they take to defining and understanding “whiteness?” What is the “problem” and what is the “solution” they are exploring/suggesting—and what are the differences and similarities in their definitions of these?
How are they thinking about/what are they contributing to “the study of whiteness?” Note that these are very broad questions and may not apply to all the topics or books that you select…. Do not simply summarize your different resources in sequential order. Think about what your “research question” or overall aim is: what is it that you are exploring in/through these resources? What argument do you (and your resources) want to make?
What are the key points in those resources that help you explore and develop your own focus? How do they complicate (or perhaps contradict) each other’s arguments? The questions are very similar if you are doing a book review, where even if your focus in on one author, the issue of what arguments they are mobilizing and how are still there. Use the required number of class readings to help you start and frame the points you are making and the conversation in your resources you are exploring. Remember, this is not a mini-research paper. It is a paper in which you analyze key arguments and assumptions mobilized by authors in order to compare the way in which they approach a particular topic or issue.
