Unit 3: Health Promotion and Family Nursing Practice
3.1 Overview
The milieu for health promotion is likely to differ significantly across families, depending on composition, structure, socioeconomic class, living environment, cultural context, and family history (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011, p. 109).
Traditionally, family nursing models and family health assessment tools have been designed to measure both the strengths and deficits of the family. The information collected is analyzed and a nursing diagnosis is formulated around the problems and risks that the family face. The intervention plan that follows is usually driven by the health professional to fix the problem and eliminate the risks, which is a very paternalistic approach. A collaborative process amongst health professionals, patients, and families towards health promotion helps empower patients and families in their health experience. Patients and families who readjust their lens to focus on the opportunities ahead while taking on an active role in planning health related activities and goals fosters commitment and support amongst each other.
