Mood disorders can affect every aspect of a person’s life, making even the most basic tasks difficult for patients and their families to complete. This was the case for Jeanette, a 13-year-old who was having difficulties at home and at school. Jeanette had temper outbursts, impulsiveness, inappropriate conduct, trouble with judgment, and sleep problems for more than 8 years.
You must be able to determine whether these symptoms are caused by psychological, social, or underlying growth and development issues as a PNP working with pediatric patients. You must then be able to make appropriate therapy recommendations.
This week, while you study antidepressant therapy, you’ll look at how to assess and treat three different populations: children, adults, and the elderly. Your decision tree, which will serve as your assessment tool, will focus on one of the most vulnerable populations: children. Remember to think about the ethical and legal consequences of these therapies as well. You’ll also have to take a quiz on the ideas covered in this section.

Assessing and Treating Mood Disorders in Children and Adolescents
The process of examining, diagnosing, and treating pediatric patients with mood disorders can be fairly difficult. Children not only have different indications and symptoms than adults with the same diseases, but they also metabolize drugs differently. However, in both pediatric and adult cases of major depressive disorders, the same psychopharmacologic therapy may be used. As a result, while prescribing psychotropic drugs to these patients, psychiatric nurse practitioners must be cautious. Consider how you may assess and treat pediatric patients who present with mood disorders as you look over the patient case study in this week’s Learning Resources for this Assignment.
