Description
This assignment might be fairly controversial. I am introducing you here to Tim Wise, who has been an anti-racism advocate for many years. Much of his work has to do with white privilege and the blindness of Caucasians to the privilege they carry. Ah, that may have already raised some eyebrows!
Some of you will love him, and some of you will hate him. I am interested in your perspective either way.
Here is the link to his 2017 talk, which took place shortly after the current administration took office. As one can predict, he has something to say about the race agenda of the current administration, but mostly he outlines how white privilege has been taught and encouraged in working-class America over the past two hundred years.
Race and Whiteness in the Era of Trumpism
(Links to an external site.)Here are the questions I would like you to address:
1) Share three key points that Wise made in this film. Please give your reaction to these points. (200-word minimum)
2) Wise shares the history of “white rage” as a key factor in the history of American social movements. Pull a few examples from his talk as illustrations of white rage. How do you feel about his argument? (200-word minimum)
3) We can tie this into the present-day with the Black Lives Matter movement. The counter-dialogue is that “all” lives matter. Why does Wise say that this reframe misses the point? What is your perspective on this dialogue? (100-word minimum)
This is likely to be an emotionally charged post. I just ask that you keep your writing professional and not engage in any name-calling or labeling in your writing.
Please remember to review the rubric for film reviews. Particular points to keep in mind:
1) Cite the film.
2) Tie Newman into your discussion, and cite.
3) Add a reference page that includes both the film and Newman.
4) Avoid the word “you” in the paper, as this will lead to an automatic 4-point penalty.
