Substantive Representation of Women’s Interests
( I NTERSECTIONALITY : T HE F INAL F RONTIER )
Imagine it. You’re hanging out on the quad, enjoying the last of Central New York’s warm fall weather when an alien being suddenly appears out of nowhere. The alien introduces herself: “Hello. My name is Star. I represent an interplanetary feminist collective. I’ve come to earth on behalf of the collective to learn about intersectional feminism. Do you know anyone that can help me?” Despite feelings of fear, excitement and confusion, you manage a response: “I can help you with that. I’m learning about intersectionality in my WGS 101 class. I’ll write an essay and teach you what I know.” it should be made up of two parts: description and analysis. To better focus your thoughts, you will exclusively focus on readings assigned between 9/24 and 10/24.
PART ONE: Intersectional Feminism (2 t0 2.5 pages)
Define, describe and discuss intersectionality using ideas and examples found in TWO of the sources listed below. For example, how does intersectionality complicate universal definitions of ‘woman’ and ‘women’s issues’? Does intersectionality only address differences, or can it also help us develop analyses of shared struggles & similarities? Part One of your essay should be about 2.5 pages and must include citations from two of the following sources (assigned readings from 9/24 class):
- “Disability as a New Frontier for Feminist Intersectionality Research” (Hirschmann 2012)
- “Warring on Women: Understanding Complex Inequalities of Gender, Race, Class, and Nation” (Okazawa-Rey 2002)
- “Standing for Women? Which Women? The Substantive Representation of Women’s Interests and the Research Imperative of Intersectionality” (Smooth 2011)
PART TWO: Intersectional Feminist Analyses (2.5 to 3 pages)
Now that you’ve defined and described intersectional feminism, you’ll demonstrate its analytical potential. That is, you’ll put intersectionality into practice by developing an intersectional feminist analysis of ONE of the following topics. Your analysis must include references to THREE different course readings assigned between 9/26 and 10/24.
