Population and Environment: After you’ve decided on a topic, you’ll need to figure out WHO you’ll be teaching and WHERE the education will take place. (For example, instructing middle school students in a classroom; instructing community members at a local health fair)
Barriers to Learning: Refer to the following passage from the assigned article: Patient education: For information on learning barriers and other teaching considerations, see Understanding Barriers, Learning Styles, and Teaching Techniques. Cultural, physical, educational, or environmental barriers may exist. You should also think about the developmental stages of the population you’ve chosen.
Example:
Because the population in this community is known to be low-literate, clear pictures and graphics will be used to aid comprehension.
Learning objectives are as follows: Make a list of three specific learning goals that your Visual Teaching Tool will address. Begin each goal with the phrase “At the conclusion of this education, the learner will…” Finish the sentence with an action verb (e.g., list, demonstrate, describe, define, identify).
Example:
The learner will be able to demonstrate how to properly wear a bike helmet at the conclusion of this course.
The learner will be able to describe how to perform a breast self-exam at the conclusion of this course.
The learner will be able to list three benefits of regular physical activity at the conclusion of this course.
Evaluation:
Write a paragraph describing how you would assess whether your visual teaching tool was effective and met the learning goals. Consider the population’s abilities as well as the environment.
Visual Tool for the Second Part
Brochure for Education (Using Microsoft Word)
To create your Visual Teaching Tool, you must use the Patient Teaching Plan you developed in this course.
Open Microsoft Word and choose New Document from the File menu.
Select Education Brochure from the Education menu. This will give you a tri-fold brochure template that is blank. You have complete control over the design, graphics, and text.
This Educational Brochure is designed to address the three learning outcomes you identified in your Patient Teaching Plan. All three learning objectives should have been met once the learner has viewed your Educational Brochure.
Consider the following scenario:
If one of the learning objectives in the Patient Teaching Plan is, “At the end of this education, the learner will be able to demonstrate the proper way to wear a bike helmet,” your Educational Brochure should include information on how to do so.
