Part 2: Accomplishment Statements
Accomplishments dont have to be as large as climbing the top of Mount Everest or starting your own company. We accomplish many things in our lives every day that have meaning. For example, perhaps you organized volunteers for your schools food drive or made an extremely profitable sale. Or, if youre more advanced in your career, perhaps youve received a promotion or special recognition.
In this part of the assignment, youll identify two accomplishments from work, school, volunteering, or other activities. Youll then practice communicating these in ways appropriate for a résumé.
To begin, brainstorm accomplishments from your work, school, volunteering, or other activities. Read the Accomplishment Categories section for a list. After youve identified two accomplishments, write statements for each accomplishment using the information below:
Step 1: Think about each of your accomplishments in these terms:
Situation, problem, or requirement.
Specific actions you took to resolve or meet the challenge.
The benefit created in specific and measurable terms. Be sure to tie results to the organizations goals when possible.
Clarifying details, such as numbers or percentages, to provide context (consider answering how many, how much, how long, or how often).
Consider the example below of someone with experience as a retail manager:
An increase in customer complaints about the helpfulness of staff.
Developed a new training program for staff, got approval from district manager, and once approved implemented it with a regular review process.
After 3 months, customer complaints decreased.
Previously, customer complaints averaged 4 per week.
After 3 months, complaints averaged 1 or less per week.
Step 2: Write two accomplishment statements to practice using this format:
Lack of practical solutions
Introduce training practices
Team efforts and willingness to interact
There was an issue with practicality but there is a reduction of the same leading to positive solutions
The general society influencing the students activities
Encouragement and proper scheduling
Proper planning for even unknown challenges
There is an issue of lack of focus among students that results in numerous problems but with planning and scheduling there is improvement
Step 3: Now, try writing your two accomplishment statements concisely for a résumé (you will not be completing a resume). Use either example format below to write your accomplishments:
Accomplishment Statement 1: Result + action + brief description including clarifying details.
Example: Decreased customer complaints from 3 per week to 1 or less per week by training staff and implementing a regular review process.
Accomplishment Statement 2: Action + brief description with clarifying details + results.
Example: Trained retail staff in customer-service techniques and implemented a regular review process, decreasing customer complaints from 3 per week to 1 or less per week.
Accomplishment Statement 1
There would be an increase in practical solutions towards the educative standards and interactions that will help improve the way that people do strive towards education.
Accomplishment Statement 2
It will also be relevant that the future interactions in the society do include the success and investments that students do invest in the present day.
Part 3: Reflect on Your Experiences
1) How has reflecting on your goals, strengths, areas of growth, and accomplishments been valuable for you?
Reflecting on goals, strengths, accomplishments, and areas of growth have been valuable in a way that I did not lose sight of my interests. The goals do help act as a compass to help provide a sense of direction in interactions while the strengths do make it easier as a sense of driving force towards the right directions. The areas of growth do provide opportunities for changes and the accomplishments do help provide a positive feeling after putting in the work and efforts.
2) What are ways you can build in a regular practice of reflection?
It is important to implement regular practices of reflection through coming up with realistic goals. The goals must reflect on the interactions which help derive the interactions which are basic towards the goals ones seeks to attain. For instance, one should set out goals within their interests and their achievements to make sure that they do achieve them instead of striving outside their interests which sometimes becomes a challenge to achieve their goals and strategies.
3) In your current understanding of the 10 Skills, identify 12 skills that you believe have helped you reach the accomplishments listed in Part 2. Briefly explain how.
Determination and remaining as a disciplined individual have helped push me to achieve the necessary accomplishments that I did set out. It is important to understand that determination does put the goals into focus and make sure that they are the right strategy that will help push towards achieving the set-out goals. Discipline is important because it helps make sure that one has the right focus and strives to achieve them within the set time and targets that is vital for interactions.
4) After practicing writing your accomplishments in a résumé-appropriate style, do you feel more confident in expressing your accomplishments to an employer? Briefly explain.
Yes, I do feel confident to approach an employer with the listed accomplishments because it is productive, and it is efficient to the way that they do interact. It is important to understand that there is a major level of confidence in coming up with accomplishments because they do represent a greater picture, and this helps in providing the right insight into how to help push towards becoming an important employee.
