Description
Please consider the following diagnoses for Valeria and provide the reasoning behind your diagnostic decisions. If she meets criteria, explain exactly how. If she does not, explain how you ruled it out. Mention specific diagnostic criteria in your answer. Later, you will be asked to think about factors that may influence your interpretation/diagnosis – but here just focus on whether or not she meets criteria. (15 points total).
You do not need to tell me all of the diagnostic criteria for each of these mental health conditions. More detail is needed to justify endorsing a diagnosis than is needed to rule one out. For example [using PTSD which is not a choice below], if there was no traumatic event a person cannot be diagnosed with PTSD – so, it would be unnecessary to explain all of the other ways that person does not meet criteria for PTSD.
In contrast, if the person has had a traumatic experience and you think they might have PTSD you would need to explain what other symptoms they have that lead them to meet all of the required diagnostic criteria. If you are less certain about whether one of the diagnoses is appropriate you may want to add detail about what makes it look like diagnosis X and also what you don’t see that would need to be present for it to be diagnosis X.
a. Does Valeria meet criteria for Panic Disorder? Why or why not? Explain.
b. Does Valeria meet criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (either current or lifetime)? Why or why not? Explain.
c. Does Valeria meet criteria for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? Why or why not? Explain.
d. Does Valeria meet criteria for Separation Anxiety Disorder? Why or why not? Explain.
e. Does Valeria meet criteria for a Specific Phobia? Why or why not? Explain.
f. Does Valeria meet criteria for Social Anxiety Disorder? Why or why not? Explain.
2. Assessment (10 points):
a. What would be the advantages/disadvantages of using a Structured Clinical Interview (like the SCID described in class) with Valeria in your first meeting with her? What would be the advantages/disadvantages of using an Unstructured Interview with her in that first meeting? If your primary concern was cultural competence and identity-affirming assessment, what type of interview would you choose and why?b. What would self-monitoring, standardized symptom questionnaires, and one other assessment tool of your choosing contribute to an assessment designed to help you understand and treat Valeria’s problems with anxiety? Make sure to be clear about what these assessment tools measure and what their different contributions would be.
3. Causes (10 points): Provide a Biopsychosocial explanation for Valeria’s psychological difficulties based on her case and what is known about causes of the mental disorder(s) she is experiencing. a) Be specific about each of the three different aspects of this model, and address both the risk and protective elements of this model.
4. Treatment (15 points): Develop a three component treatment plan for Valeria that includes one specific Behavioral treatment component, one specific Cognitive treatment component, and one other treatment element/component that would be appropriate for Valeria given what is known about effective treatments for the mental health difficulties she is having.
Please be sure to note which treatment component is associated with which theoretical model/perspective in your answer, and briefly explain why it fits with that model. Explain which specific symptoms/issues would be best addressed by each of the different components of your treatment plan, and explain any potential limitations of your plan.
