Potential Sources of Sediments in New York Beaches
Terrigenous parental materials are among the potential sources of sediments in the New York beaches. They include the deposits from land created by erosion and some of the metamorphic minerals and igneous rocks, as well as limestone and marble. The size of these materials depends on their source. As a result, locally sourced materials are generally large while the far-sourced ones are fine and small sized. Therefore, it may be possible that the materials washed away from the land through erosion are potential contributors to beach sediments.
The biogenic parental materials can be considered another probable source of beach deposits. These include the skeletons and shells of marine organisms that are swept from the ocean by the waves and tides resulting in being left on the shores. The implication here is that after the sea organisms die, their remnants usually float on the water and thus eventually find themselves on the edges of the ocean where they are dropped by tides. These contribute to the large amount of beach deposits and thus marking one of the major potential sources. In other words, the biological remains of sea creatures are one of the major sources of shore deposits.
The anthropogenic materials also lead to the pileup of beach deposits. These include items that do not naturally come from either the sea or land but instead are created by human activity. Most of these types of sediments arise from manufactured objects. Examples include glass, ceramics, plastics, metals, pottery, paper, among others. Some of these wastes arise because of dumping while others can also be washed to the sea from land by runoff. Based on the nature of such material, there is no doubt that human factors contribute to the deposit of sediments on the New York shores.
