Description/Paper Instructions
On the basis of the course competencies addressed, the discussion assignment provides a venue for debating pertinent themes for this week.
Make sure you publish your initial comment to the Discussion Area by the due date for this assignment.
Use your course and text readings, as well as the South University Online Library, to aid your work. Cite your sources in your work, as in other assignments, and include references for the citations in APA format.
As early as possible in the week, begin examining and commenting to your classmates’ postings. At least two of your peers’ original postings must be responded to. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, clarifying something, expressing a point of view with a rationale, disputing a point of contention, or pointing out a relationship between two or more lines of argument. In your comments to other classmates, cite references. By the end of the week, you must have completed your participation for this task.
When police officers are killed in the line of duty, the dangers of their jobs are brought to the public’s attention. This is especially true when the officers appear to have been ambushed on purpose. Clearly, the connection between the police and the community varies greatly from one location to the next.
Discuss how police perceptions fluctuate depending on the community or culture.
The “militarization” of municipal police in America has been questioned by police critics. Explain what this term means and whether or not it is an accurate description.
We looked at “positive” theories earlier in the course, which argue that criminal behavior is often impacted by events outside the offender’s control. Can positive theories be applied to police officers who use excessive force or abuse their authority in other ways?
Police departments across the country are increasingly relying on “body cams.” These are gadgets that a patrol officer wears on his or her uniform to record audio and video during encounters with citizens. Body cameras, according to proponents, will deter and detect police misbehavior. What are the disadvantages of wearing a body camera? What is the attitude of the police unions on this issue?
