- What is your overall impressions about the quality of your child’s education?
My impression of the quality is that with this remote learning the children are getting ready for future jobs. It is teaching them to adapt to new ways and fast, hence us adults meeting a deadline in the office. It also helps with creativity. My girls have shown new ways to stay engaged in class and become leaders. This remote learning has helped them come out of the shells and show true leadership. They are leading their groups and showing their teachers not only that they want to learn but that no one is taking them for no fool.
- Do think the school or school district is providing your child with a good education?
Yes, my girls are far more advanced. They have a love for reading that I have always desired. They stay on honor rolls and exceed every marking period. They also hit home runs with those state exams always scoring above a 4. I couldn’t be prouder.
- How often do you communicate with your child’s teachers?
I speak with their teachers remotely minimum once a week. There are times if I have a question about something we will speak more. The school communicates overall 2-3 times a week depending what changes are going on.
- Is there one teacher who stands out from the rest as being exceptional? Why?
My daughter has had the many wonderful teachers throughout the years, the one that stands out to me is DR Johnson. When my eldest first started there she was a dean in the school that had a specials relationship with all the students. She was part of the afterschool program for the STEP team. In the step team she helped give my daughter the push she needed to come out of her shell and stand up for herself. She was also a young teacher working on her doctrine. In her final year she finally graduated with her degree. She was a woman that was able to relate to the youth, especially our girls of color and showed them that they can achieve anything. She always spoke to the girls especially and reminded them the importance of an education. Thanks to her my daughter speaks about attain her doctrine. I tell my baby she can do anything she sets her mind to and I will always cheer her on.
- Are you active in school functions, such as PTO or other school program?
I do attend most PTA meetings, because I need to know what is going on in the schools. I attend most school functions as well. My 2nd attends afterschool because she likes to try everything. My eldest no longer goes because with 3 different pick ups its difficult to split myself in 3.
- If the school or school district could change one thing, what should that be?
My biggest wish would be smaller classroom size. So that they can have more time with there teachers.
- What might help you become more active in your child’s schooling?
If I could work less and get paid the same it will make this much more easier. I think I spread myself pretty well for the things these kids need to do and how long their day is.
Teacher Interview 1
What do you teach? (Get their background)
I currently teach 1st grade general education in an ict setting.
What is the most difficult part of your job?
Not having enough direction from administration.
What is the best part of your job?
Watching my students learn something new and light up once they grasp it.
Tell me about the curriculum you use. Does the school provide one? Is it comprehensive?
Most of the content based learning we teach is based around curriculum that encourages common core standards. For instance, our reading and writing program, teachers college, is extremely detailed and takes a while to fully comprehend the approach.
Does high-stakes testing affect your teaching style?
Not at all.
How do you engage students? What is your classroom management practice?
In my effort to engage my students, i make it a habit to constantly include relatable content in my teaching. For instance, our social studies lesson promoted me to simply show a video for Hispanic heritage day. However, alongside the video i bought in my guitar and sang to my students a Spanish song.
Do you have a supportive administration?
Somewhat.
What is the biggest hurdle you faced as a new teacher?
My biggest hurdle was all of the unknowns that have been surrounding the school year. My administration has had so much on their plate that i feel my first year teaching “essentials” were put to the side because they Have so much other things to handle.
What three things would you change about public education?
The lack of accountability on teachers that have received tenure. The lack of diversity found in our schools staff. I would enforce ALL schools to see the importance of implementing REAL Steam programs in Every school and not only in the public schools in more affluent areas.
How do you involve parents and the community?
I have a constant forum for the parents of my students everyday via classdojo. I also make myself available to the school community when parents do not understand technology or need help with translation between English and Spanish.
Can you please briefly describe your school safety policy and procedures?
My school heavily relies on our BRT (building response team). This group of staff members handles covid cases, potential emergencies such as intruders, fires etc. Each member on the team has been made fully aware of their responsibilities and posts for safety measures and procedures.
What strategies do you find most successful for ELLs?
ELLs and their families need to be told how important it is to hold onto their native languages. Some ELLs struggle when they stop using their native tongue while learning a new one. I have seen so much success in incorporating their languages in an activity, read aloud, and/or song when teaching English. It allows them to make a connection to what they know and what they are about to learn.
How do you handle the diversity in your classroom?
I make it a point to highlight the diversity in my classroom, especially through read alouds. The books i read have main characters that come from all walks of life. All different shades. All different hairs types. I make sure most of the heroes we read about look like my students,
Do you think your job would be different if you were teaching in a different district? If yes, how so?
Yes.I enjoy working for the district that i do. My school in particular has a large Hispanic population and i feel because i can relate and understand them. Perhaps working in another district that has a lower population of hispanics or ELLs would not make me as useful.
Teacher Interview 2
What do you teach? (Get their background).
I am a bilingual Speech therapist and teach Pre-k through Second grade. I remediate delays in articulation, receptive and expressive difficulties and social/pragmatic skills.
What is the most difficult part of your job?
The most difficult part of my job is trying to bring awareness to teachers of what is a true language deficit compared to normal second language acquisition and ensuring that students do not get over referred for services based on “not speaking English”. Language norms, age levels and cultural differences are ignored and many Spanish children are referred on basis that they do not speak language. Meanwhile in his/her native language the student is quite proficient! Its difficult to comprehend that my professional opinion, skills and knowledge are not respected or ignored but I continue to advocate for the bilingual population.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is seeing the progress that a student makes. When a non verbal child can Finally make a request, state their own personal need, put a sentence together and truly communicate on their own and you can see how proud they are of themselves it makes it worth every self doubt, hurdle and difficulty I may have faced.
How do you engage students? What is your classroom management practice?
I try to engage students by identifying their strengths and interests. Working off of their attributes helps me to create an environment where i can foster learning in a positive and “fun” manner. Although i love to create a fun, positive, creative learning Environment i like to provide structure and routine. I make sure that I begin the school year by providing students with clear expectations verbally and visually for behavior and a positive reinforcer. When an issue arises I try to reinforce my expectations but also provide an option so that the Student feels involved in the process.
What is the biggest hurdle you faced as a new teacher?
As a new teacher I felt that I did not have sufficient guidance. I had previously worked with agencies and severely delayed populations, aged birth to 5 years old, where I used play therapy, augmentative communication devices and applied behavioral analysis techniques as my mode of therapy (for over 10 years) . When I started at the DOE, I was not shown or explained the curriculum, did not have training or the opportunity to shadow a fellow therapist. I was basically given a caseload of students ranging from Prek to 5th grade and expected to now remediate delays in language, reading and writing without any experience in curricular teaching through various modes or styles. In Addition I know had to create lesson plans and complete lots of paperwork while abiding to school regulations, teacher schedules and supervisor timelines. I felt so overwhelmed and as if i was just thrown in to figure it all out on ny own. My first year was filled with lots of doubt, research, trial and error combined with tears! But i stuck through it and am still here 11 years later!
What strategies do you find most successful for ELLs?
I find that ELLs benefit from multi sensory methods where they are provided opportunities for hands on learning with visuals and clear definitions, expectations. Allowing them to learn using tactile, visual, auditory methods provides various modes for learning and reinforcing repetition.
